In that year, Dixonville became the first incorporated community in Speedway Township. The township was organized on November 3, 1903. On December 16, 1916, the name of the town changed from Dixonville to Speedway. It became an unincorporated community on February 15, 1947. On July 1, 1957, Speedway became a city and adopted its current name of " Speedway". The city's population reached 2,000 in 2011 and has grown rapidly over the years with additions of new businesses and residences.

Speedway is a town in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Speedway was George Witherspoon in 1837. By 1841, there were seven families living in Speedway with a total of fourteen people. The first post office opened in this town on October 12, 1841. In 1865, Fuel Oil Company founder John Denton established an oil well near present-day Speedway and began production. Denton named the well after his son-in-law's birthplace—Skipperville, Pennsylvania—on account of its close proximity to that community. In 1889, Electric Light & Power Company owner Henry Ford set up shop north of present-day Speedway and started producing electricity from coal and oil lamps for use by local businesses and homes. In 1913, the company changed its name to General Motors Corporation (GMC). On May 17, 1924 Speedway residents adopted a resolution urging American President Franklin D Roosevelt to enter World War II due to the alarming situation on home front caused by then-President Harding's "restraint" on military spending; however no action was taken until November 2 when Roosevelt announced America would be entering into World War II without Congressional approval due to congressional inaction during peacetime which he called the "First Hundred Days". With racecar racing now being largely professionalized it became possible for small towns like Speedway to have their own speedways which helped promote rural tourism such as through advertising campaigns and also brought attention to hometowns internationally as well; these speedways were often built adjacent or within easy access of smaller communities so tourists could see live performance by local talent while visiting those places
The Speedway was opened in 1912 by the Indiana Automobile Racing Commission. The first race were held on October 20, 1912 and it was won by a Ford automobile. It served as a racetrack until 1916 when it became an airfield for bombers during World War I. The airfield was closed in 1919 and the track was abandoned until 1935 when it reopened as a speedway. The track improved from its original layout and began to take on professional racing as well as exhibition races. In 1955, the track hosted the United States Grand Prix which is now known as the Indianapolis 500 Race.
