Arms Race Ammunition Manufacturing Company was started by Augustus Biddle in 1888 as a munitions factory for the Ford Motor Company in Dearborn Heights, Michigan. In 1915 they moved their manufacturing operations to Speedway after purchasing land there from J&L Gun Works adjacent to then-Speedway Racetrack. They manufactured various types of arms ammunition including shells for artillery and machine guns alike as well as hand grenades and mortar rounds. They also produced components for aircraft engines during World War II before moving production back to Dearborn Heights following the war’s end.

In 1887, Speedway was founded as a horse racing track by entrepreneur Andrew Mellon. The first race was held on October 9th, 1887. It took place between the two American tracks of Yonkers and Albany. At the time, it was one of the most popular racing circuits in America. In 1912, Speedway became an all-weather track and hosted the Indianapolis 500 motorcycle race each year. The event also served as the final round of the season for both NASCAR and Indy Racing League (IRL). In 1952, Speedway merged with IRL’soval to become one single entity known as “The Brickyard”. In 1978, Speedway underwent a $2 million renovation that increased its capacity from 2,000 to 4,500 spectators. This renovation also included new grandstands and a press box that could seat up to 350 people. In 1999, The Brickyard closed for good after serving its original purpose for over 50 years. Today it is home to multiple museums including The Smithsonian Museum of American History and The Indiana State Fairgrounds Visitor Center which open daily from 9am-5pm during summer months and 9am-4pm during winter months
