The Association quickly became known for its fast tracks and innovative race cars. In 1916, AMA constructed a new $2 million track on the west side of Indianapolis that still holds the record for fastest speed ever recorded at 200 mph (320 km/h). Other famous AMA races at Speedway include the 500-mile race won by Frank Harriman in 1948 and Randy Moss' Sprint Cup championship victory in 1999. By the late 1990s, NASCAR had taken over most ofAMA's operations; however, several events still take place at Speedway including the Amalie Arena Challenge Race Series presented by Hyatt Regency Indianapolis and the Grand Prix of Champions motorcycle race.
The Speedway was built in 1922 as a racetrack. It became a World War II airbase in 1944, and then served as a point of entry for the Indianapolis 500 race. The track was sold to the Indiana Racing Association in 1949 and became an open-air circuit. The association dissolved in 1951, and the track was taken over by the Indiana Automobile Club. It reverted to an all-weather track in 1957, and attendance at the track plummeted during the 1960s due to economic troubles. In 1973, it was closed following damage caused by a tornado.
