The townspeople voted unanimously to name their new community "South Bend" after then-President George Washington along with nearby Terre Haute and New Prague (now northwest Indianapolis). In 1850–51 South Bend issued $1 worth of stamps depicting farms near Terre Haute plus images from various American presidents; each stamp sold for $2 ($10 total back then). On November 3rd 1862 during Indian Removal southwest of South Bend by General David Hunter Apache Indians fought a Native American skirmish off Sanborn Road which left three men dead—the only reported killed during British Indian military occupations leading up to America’s entry into World War II as well as one Crawford County death prior thereto – this event helped spur Congress’ passage on May 8th 1863 “An act to provide for organizing Territories Within The United States And For Other Purposes” creating Northwest Territory comprising present day Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota; these lands were gradually divided among those westward according to Manifest Destiny objectives laid out by territorial congressmen like Salmon Pelly and John Crampton through surveys & hearings across western states starting in January 1864 culminating February 1865 when final boundaries were set down citing mineral riches & Mexican boundary disputes between US Dakota & Mexico As noted above much development took place outsideof what is currently called downtown or “Old Town” until around 1920s/30s when large blocks built by local merchants near Wabash Avenue & Third Street started coming down due primarily urban renewal efforts spearheaded by Mayor James Baughman followed by later Mayor Elmer Gantry During WWII Home Defense industries resulted in vast addition (>3000 businesses)of jobs within 5 miles radius Downtown while Maintaining public services including firefighting grew rapidly resulting today in over 500 full time jobs just inside Downtown limits

On October 1, 1840, a branch line from Michigan to Indiana was completed and named the "South Bend Branch Line". The first train ran on this line on October 5th. In 1850-1851 a school was built in town and it is still in use today as South Bend High School.
