The area now known as South Bend was first inhabited by the Potawatomi Indian tribe. The area was part of the Shawnee Nation until it was ceded to the United States in 1813. In 1814, the Indiana Territory was created and South Bend became its capital. The city's growth began during the 1830s, when settlers started arriving from Illinois and Michigan. By 1840, South Bend had a population of around 10,000 people. During the 1850s, construction began on what is now downtown South Bend. This included the building of the first courthouse in Indiana and other important infrastructure projects. In 1861, while Chicago was being built to becomethe world's largest city, South Bend became an important center for trade and commerce. In 1865, following Union victory in the American Civil War, Congress passed a bill makingSouth Bend an official city within Indiana.
