The history of optical accessories in South Bend, Indiana can be traced back to the 1800s. early opticians in South Bend made use of glass lenses and mirrors to provide customers with superior vision. In 1857, a glass-blowing shop was opened in downtown South Bend by John A. Maynard and his brother James Maynard. Soon, other businesses followed suit and the atmosphere at the old downtown plant became an important factor in the success of this business. In 1861, a new company was established called The Maynards Company which manufactured glass and metal lenses for telescopes, microscopes, binoculars, etc. This company continued to operate until 1913 when it merged with another company to become TheMaynards Corporation. At this point in time, South Bend's optical industry had reached a high level and many famous manufacturers were based here including Rheinland & Weybright (1914-1966), Bausch & Lomb (1898-1967), Paramount Radio Corporation (1922-1968), JVC Electronics Inc. (1978-present). During World War II, Optical Components Division of TheMaynards Corporation produced optics for military applications such as aircraft turrets and night sights. After the war ended, Optical Components Division transitioned into electronic components production which continues to this day as part of JVC's electronic products line up
South Bend, Indiana is a town located in the northeastern United States. The population was 25,848 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Vigo County. The name "South Bend" comes from an early French settlement in this location and means "place of South Bend." The first people to live in what is now South Bend were the Potawatomi Indians. In 1805, French traders founded a fur trading post near the mouth of the river that became known as Fort Dearborn. When France lost control of Canada during the Seven Years' War, its traders moved westward and established their capital in what is now Chicago. In 1814, Congress designated Vigo County as part of newly created Michigan Territory because of disputed borders between Iowa and Illinois Territory. In 1829, land on which South Bend would be built was patented to Joseph Wabash for $6,000 by territorial governor John Pemberton. The Wabashes were among America's earliest settlers and arrived just after Michigan became a state. By 1830, they had erected a small cabin on land that would become present-day downtown South Bend. That year also saw Purdue University's founding as one of several colleges authorized by Congress under President Andrew Jackson's plan to promote American education abroad.- During Indiana's protracted period as a critical crossroads between Ohio and Kentucky during the 1850s; many entrepreneurs turned to this small village for business start-ups including David Brown & Co., an oil refinery and chemical distributorship on North High Street.; Philip Hennepin Brewing Company opened its doors in 1863 on West Washington Street.; two churches began operating simultaneously - First Presbyterian Church (1862) adjoining Northwestern Baptist Church (1863), becoming official until 1870 when both merged into one congregation; four schools opened - Notre Dame de la Salle School (1864), Holy Cross Catholic School (1866), Central High School (1868) east side from current State Capitol building then north side from present site of Statehouse; An Act to establish Dingwall College authorized enrollment for women beginning with Class I students starting September 1st 1861; IUPUI started offering classes leading up to college admission undergraduate level on November 15th 1861.; One hundred years later: On October 5th 2018 IUPUI celebrated its centennial with events including an exhibit about IUPUI’s history titled “Centennial Celebration: A History through Photographs”

The name of the city comes from South Bend Township (now part of south Bend), which was first settlement in what is now South Bend County in 1824. The community has been inhabited by humans for over 11,000 years and was known as "The Town of Notre Dame" because of its location near the University of Notre Dame in nearby Notre Dame Park. The earliest confirmed reference to this town is from 1292 AD when an entry mentions "Huguenotorum villa". In 1775, French explorers named it La Ville de la Terre à Jésus-Christ (Town of Jesus Christ) after their discovery of that location. In 1824, South Bend Township was organized as one of twelve townships in Northwest Indiana under the supervision of the General Assembly. On July 1, 1827, South Bend became a Village under the direction and control of a board composed thereof consisting principallyof landowners who had contributed land for village formation. In 1851 when Northwest Indiana became a State and Abraham Lincoln was elected President, South Bend became one of its five original counties within that state. As part as any other county within that state, it played an important role during Indian Wars fought by both American and Canadian forces against Native Americans throughout most or all northwest Indiana until 1865 when those hostilities ended with peace treaties signed between these nations. Because so much action took place outside the small confines of South Bend County proper during this time period there are few contemporary examples extant to support assertions that such activity actually centered around townspeople; however local historian Lewis Sully has written convincingly demonstrating this claim through his research into early history and cultural expressions associated with our community dating back to before European contact

On February 14 – 15, 1927 – South Bend was made a later city by an act of the General Assembly following its incorporation into a municipality which had been authorized by an act passed in 1922 and signed into law by President James K. Polk Jr..
