Some of the earliest laser sights were developed by George Hill and his team at Insight Optics in South Bend. They first used a device called an optic lens to create a visible image on a screen that could be tracked and focused with an eye chart. South Bend is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the seat of county government for[1] Elkhart County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 146,853. The history of South Bend goes back to 1824 when a group of men led by George Rogers Clark founded a town on the east side of Lake Michigan called North Bend.[2][3] settlers arrived in great numbers during the 1800s,[4] but it wasn't until 1825 that a post office was established at what is now known as Downtown South Bend with the name "North Bend". Eventually, business ran out of space in North Bend so downtown was renamed "South Bend",[5][6][7] becoming one of the most prominent cities in Western Indiana. In 1907, following annexation into Elkhart County, South Bend became its own municipality with a mayor and five council members who were responsible for all aspects of municipal life from water supply to zoning regulations.[8] The first school building was built in 1909 on corner lot at Broadway/Michigan Avenue - this structure served as both City Hall until 1945 when East High School opened adjacent to City Hall. In 1912–13 architect Stephen Tompkins designed two new buildings for South bend Municipal Court - these structures are now known as Tompkins Hall Annexes on First Street between Elmwood Avenue and Battle Road (now Route 32). On July 1st 1915,[9][10] South Bend incorporated as an independent city under charter number 3235 A from Elkhart County.[11][12][13][14][15] At this time there were only 2 people living in town – Mayor John Pappagelli[16] and Councilman Emilio Giannini - both men resigned 6 months later due to health concerns after being diagnosed with cancerous melanoma (later stage skin cancer). In 1935,[17], Mayor Jno Pappagelli dedicated Oneonta Park - then one small piece of undeveloped land near downtown south bend - to serve as home field for south bend high school football team while they played their games at Dearborn Park located north west side Of town across street from American Can Company Building where today we find American Can Museum

South Bend, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of St. Joseph County. The population was 22,813 at the 2010 census. South Bend is one of the "Big Ten" universities and has been ranked as one of America's "most livable cities." The first permanent settler in what would become South Bend was John James Audubon, who arrived in 1824. He built a cabin on the north side of town and named it Audubon Station after his friend and mentor, Pierre-Jacques Chaudière. In 1828, General David Dunlap founded a military post here called Dunlap's Fort which served as a base for Indian raids into central Michigan Territory. The fort burned down in 1829 but was rebuilt soon afterward by General Edward Dearborn under American occupation during the Mexican War. In 1854, South Bend became part of Methodism when John Witherspoon Moore became its first bishopric president with help from Revolutionsary forces led by Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War. Bishop Moore served until his death in 1865; thereafter, South Bend remained an independent ecclesiastical jurisdiction under Methodist rule until 1907 when it merged with other Methodist churches to form Trinity United Methodist Church (TUMC). On October 15th, 1947 TUMC moved its headquarters from Chicago to South Bend following World War II bombings that destroyed much downtown business district including Audubon Station and killed more than 100 people within blocks radius around both buildings – still considered one of America’s deadliest industrial disasters ever caused by man
