A plaque at the old post office marks where he landed his voyage—on May 12th 1674—and arrived at Burlington Point on Lake Michigan about two miles from present-day downtown South Bend. In 1785 General Anthony Wayne founded Fort Dearborn on high ground just east of today's downtown South Bend for use as an artillery fortification against French forces raiding along the southern borderlands during that year's French Revolutionary Wars. The fort served as a base from which troops could operate againstuu Indians living near Fort Dearborn and also held supply warehouses for supplies being sent upriver to Detroit during those wars. It remained an army garrison until 1809 when it was surrendered by Lieutenant Colonel John Pakenham after Howe's Invasion of Canada; it then became a civilian town known only for supplying remote militaries with goods necessary for their military campaigns until 1865 when it became part of Indiana statehood following Indian Removal policies implemented by President Abraham Lincoln pursuant to his Emancipation Proclamation issued January 1st 1863 within eight days of ratifying that proclamation via Executive Order November 15th 1862). While Fort Dearborn reverted back to military status in 1811–12 under Major General James Wilkinson, civilian status continued until September 25th 1821 when all military posts were abolished within State Of Indiana effective December 1st 1821 due to expenses associated with operating them; this included Ft Dearborn which reverted back into civil control on July 28th 1825 following its general surrender at Greenfield Heights subsequent Battle between US Navies under Commodore John DanksUSN vs February 23rd 1814 Warfare off Great Lakes) resulting in US victory; however Ft Dearborn remains closed today as all active duty functions have been transferred to nearby Bartlesville since then-Commandant David Dudley USMILF . On October 2nd 1800 Mexican War veteran José Márquez died while fighting Americans near what would become modern day North Towne Street intersection now occupied by Notre Dame CathedralX ). Márquez had volunteered with units commanded by Captain Fernando Ruiz de la Torre y Cepeda Santa Clara Battalion #2 Coy cavalry led escort for Father Pedro Micheltorena who was accompanying him from Mexico City en route home from visiting friends there); Ruiz de la Torre y Cepeda Santa Clara Battalion #2 Coy eventually reached Springfield Township southwest side Canal Zone approximately three miles northeast of modern day South Bend.) At least 100 men fought under Ruiz de la Torre y Cepeda Santa Clara Battalion #2 Coy at Springfield Township battle including Fathers Micheltorena and Pedro Miguel Torres who latter also participated in later battles Steele’s Mill (1824) & Puckett’s Mill (1827). Father Torres finally died serving United States Army during Spanish American War circa 1898 .) There are several smallish buildings located adjacent these sites still standing from this skirmish.)
