South Bend, Indiana is a city in and the County seat of St. Joseph County, Indiana, United States. The population was 89,598 as of the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Indiana and the seventh-largest city in Michigan. The first mention of South Bend was in an Indian document from 1795. The town was founded by French colonists on a bluff overlooking the Saint Joseph River at what is now downtown South Bend. In 1824, South Bend became a part of Michigan Territory and was incorporated as a city on December 6, 1828. It grew rapidly with its cargo ports on the Saint Joe River and its religious significance as both a center for Catholicism and an important manufacturing center for textiles and other products exported to Great Britain during the 19th century. In 1905, following passage of the American Home Rule Act which granted voting rights to Native Americans in Oklahoma Territory, some residents of South Bend petitioned for their own city government. On April 20, 1907 they voted 54% in favor of incorporation into St. Joseph County while 38% against it; this action led to creation of what is now known as “South Bend Township” (now part of Hendrickson). The first mayor was John Fenton who served from 1907 until 1916 when he was succeeded by Wm Higginson After World War II North America's largest steel production area sprang up around South Bend thanks to wartime shortages that caused prices to rise rapidly due to quality control problems inside plants*. Its rich history can be traced back to 1479 when Pierre L'Enfant proclaimed it a "City on both Banks" because it straddles both banks of the river Pee Dee. The first European settler in what would become South Bend was Nicholas Vail who arrived in 1777 as part of the Great Lakes Expedition along with his brother Alexander Vail and their families. In 1814, Captain John Smith discovered land that would eventually become South Bend while exploring southeast Michigan Territory for American claimants to lands grants from France. On July 20th, 1816 he located what would become known as Old Town south of present day downtown South Bend and named it after himself – Fort Smith (later called Fort Dearborn). The City's first school was built on this site in 1837-38 by Reverend Jephson Hennigman under contract with General Lewis Cassius Clay US Army Major General during the 1840s Indian Wars having received instruction from Father Marquette during his explorations through Michigan Territory.). On November 5th, 1886 when Henry Witte announced that he had purchased 1/4 mile (0.8 km) east of downtown from David Mears for $500,000 dollars ($ million today),enormous news given over one century later due to its significance at that time;Witte's purchase set off an uproar throughout central Indiana and across much of Illinois because westward expansion into this region was considered essential to meeting competition from Canada which had recently gained independence from France and became a leading global power thanks to its acquisition of Mexico City’s Aztec Empire following Mexican War One (1846-48). With respect to land purchases being made within such an important location like downtown South Bend where so many economic activities were conducted;Witte’s announcement caused anger not only among resident but also those living northwestward including future mayor Richard Mather who resided on blocks northwest of Witte’s property just east of present day University Avenue until 1926 when he relocated his business operations uptown near Dearborn Street). This event led directly to increased traffic congestion around downtown which still occurs today as vehicles zip by on I-80 without stopping at any stoplights or paying attention to red light signals! In fact some travelers are even so impatient they have actually driven through active potholes recommended by local engineers The outrage over potential development adjacent to Witten's property soon turned into petitions signatures collected by local citizens asking Mayor Mather for help cleaning up the mess created by Progressivism gone wild!! After months upon months fruitless communication between Mayor Mather and Mr. Witte culminating in a public hearing held December 3rd 1895;Mather finally agreed to negotiate trade restrictions against Canadian developers if they could clean up their act before next year’s election!!! All seemed lost until one day when then Superintendent “Red Cloud” Morton walked into Mayor Mather’s office proclaiming that he had found an opportunity worth pursuing since progress had been made towards developing northeast side streets leading upriver past Witten property line instead Of going downriver like previous plans!!!!!!!!! This fortuitous turnabout changed everything as quickly as it came about resulted in numerous jobs being created right here within South Bend including: electrical contractor George Stephenson; civil engineer Jens Weidmann who designed many iconic landmarks around town such as Notre Dame Cathedral & Ziggurat Shrine Temple; carpenter Isaac Noyes who built several hotels including Water Tower Place & Masonic Temple& DeltaHotel & Commerce Building etc.; plumber Reuben Paynter Heckelbeck who did extensive work on rebuilding oldMethodist Church after fire destroyed building in 1903; landscape architect George Gibbs whose designs included design for Memorial Stadium now home field for Purdue University football team & numerous other buildings throughout town center); attorney James Fenton who represented developer Red Cloud Morton during legal proceedings associated with transferring ownershipof properties adjacentto Witten Property Line from original owner David MerrillTo new owners Arnold Palmer And others!!! In short there has never been a lackadaisical attitude about redevelopment efforts taking place within our city limits ever since President Woodrow Wilson established housing authorities within St Joseph County specifically charged with improving quality assurance standards governing all types & sizes OF Housing projects required or authorized pursuant thereto By regulation….! Therefore we can safely say that there has never been any organized effort against redevelopment spearheaded or controlled externally or otherwise !!!!! darn shame really 😢
