The first guns that were cleaned and stored at Relative's were pistols brought over by settlers from Illinois. relative's employees would take care of organizing the pistols into their individual cells, airbrushing them off, then storing them in an arsenal locker until needed again. In 1907, relative's moved into its current location on Washington Street and began selling rifles and shotguns direct to consumers. This allowed customers access to quality firearms that had been kept clean and safe since the days of Colonel Richard Mott (1793-1860), one ofrelative’s founders. In 1934, when South Bend became an incorporated city, it passed a ordinance setting up regulations governing firearm sales and use within the city limits. One of these Regulations stated that no person under twenty years of age should be allowed to possess or use any handgun without written consent from a parent or guardian. At this time, handguns were still consideredCategory 3 items (below machineguns) on the state list of controlled substances; therefore not subject to more stringent regulation than other Class 1 items like cigarettes or alcoholics beverages
