South Bend, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Porter County. The population was 54,594 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Indiana after Indianapolis and Bloomington. South Bend had a population of 77,519 as of July 1, 2015 according to the US Census Bureau's report on American Community Survey data obtained from self-reported unemployment data collected by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). The area that now makes up South Bend was first settled by Europeans in 1672 when French traders explored this region during their 1670–1674 Voyage du Fort St Louis. The Jesuits also established a mission here in 1711, while other groups such as fur traders followed over time. In 1802, an act passed by Congress authorized Michigan Territory to be formed out of Illinois, including land east of Kankakee River which then became part of what is now South Bend Township and part of what is now Porter County. However, due to Indian wars fought between northern and southern United States governments before Michigan Territory was organized, only about 2/3rds of all land within it were given to European settlers – primarily German Americans who arrived through Ellis Island – with most additional territory given to Native Americans such as Potawatomi and Kickapoo bands living near present day Notre Dame University and downtown South Bend. The first white settlement in what would become South Bend Township took place in 1814 when Nicholas Biddle purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) from David Wilkinson for $1 per acre ($20 per hectare). This site would later become home to one of America’s oldest churches: First Parish Church which was built in 1815 on land donated by Biddle himself and his wife Jane Shorttwood Biddle along with other early settler families including James Hickey Sr., John Pritzker Sr., Nathaniel Hubbard Sr., Solomon Sheldon Jr., Esther Fenton (the daughter-in-law of James Hickey), Samuel Hechtman & Sons plumbers and carpenters, John Sibley saddlery storekeeper etcetera; today’s intersection of North or East Main Street & Wabash Avenue.–Today’s buildings on that property include First Presbyterian Church building completed in 1907 but knocked down due to fire damage occurring there back then………In 1828 Nicholas Biddle sold more land comprising present day south side streets NW Topeka Road & Wabash Avenue NE corner lot containing 4 lots large enough for Lots No 5&6 only 3 lots remain off E Topeka Rd they are bounded north by Walnut Street & south by State Street…..In 1832 some German farmers started farming southeast side lot included near current day Hoagland Park….In 1850 Josephine Kling owned 350 acres (160 hectares) northeast side lot located just eastsideof current day Northwest Side Road between Highways 69th street & 20th street Including her house that still stands today….This property includes what is today known as Kling Mansion…..After years being contested between two local residents factions over control over this valuable piece Of real estate much like many others across America during those days prior too annexation changes were made resulting finally becoming part or unincorporated area we know today
