In 1847, South Bend, Indiana had its first gunsmith. The town was founded on the banks of the river St. Joseph by Methodists who wanted to establish a frontier outpost in what is now central Indiana. Thegunsmiths In South Bend became known for their firearms and hats. They produced rifles and pistols and sold them to farmers, traders, and other civilians. Many of these guns were used in Indian Wars fought between the United States and Native Americans in this area of southern Indiana. The hat industry began to develop in South Bend around 1853 when a local mill owner decided to start making hats out of cotton cloth. He named his company “Hatsville” after his home town in England where he had been born. By 1860, Hatsville had become one of the largest hatmakers in America with facilities located at 3rd Street and Michigan Avenue in downtown South Bend. Today, there are several Hat factories still operating throughout south central Indiana including Hatsville Manufacturing Company (now part of American Apparel), Fox Point Hatting & Canning Workshops Inc., West Lafayette Hatters Inc., New Albany Hats Inc., MishawakaHatters LLC., Indianapolis-based Hat manufacturer Hennepin County surplus store #2 & #3 (now defunct), Gary Hatmarelli’s Sonshatnery & Custom Shoe Factory (now closed), as well as numerous small hat stores scattered throughout southwestern Indiana that carry guns/firearms products from various manufacturers

The fort served both as a military installation and as a commercial center for goods coming into Indiana from Canada. In 1820, Congress granted land east of downtown to create what are today streets named after men who’ve played important roles in Indiana history such as George Washington and Clay Shaw: James K. Polk Drive, Harrison Ford Boulevard, etc.
