South Bend, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of St. Joseph County. The population was 37,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet metropolitan area and has been nicknamed "The City on the Lake". South Bend was founded in 1824 as a small farming town on the south side of Lake Michigan. The city grew rapidly during World War I and II due to its proximity to munitions plants, shipbuilding yards and general aviation airports. South Bend's status as a major industrial center declined after World War II but it has regained some of its former prosperity through heavy industry, especially since India became an important economic partner for South Bend in the late 1990s. The downtown core is home to several large employers including Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, ING Banknorthwest, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and Lucas Oil Refinery Corporation (now Invenergy Energy). Other significant businesses include two medical schools: University of Notre Dame School of Medicine and Fordham University School of Medicine; four hospitals: Children's Hospital Chicago, Advocate Christ Medical Center/Stritch Regional Medical Center/Bellefontaine Clinic-University Park Hospital- Lahey Health Care System; four universities: Purdue University-West Lafayette & Muncie Central High School (now North Central High School), Ball State University-Ballenger Campus & Indiana Wesleyan College-Winchester Campus; three parks—South Bend Beach Park (), Kankakee Riverfront Park () & Ibis Stadium (); five shopping malls—Price Chopper (), Macy's (), Sears (), JCPenney () &' Radisson Blu (). As one of continental United States' fastest growing cities with over 60% growth rate between 2000 and 2010 according to Forbes magazine (the most recent data available), South Bend has achieved multiple urban renewal awards from both local government officials as well as planners within their respective communities throughout various stages from pre-planning through design review all the way up until construction starts - making it one municipality that residents can feel confident about when planning their next move or investment!

South Bend, Indiana is a city in and the county seat of St. Joseph County, Indiana, United States. The population was 26,815 at the 2010 census. South Bend was founded on December 11, 1824, by Anthony Wayne and his brothers as a small town named for Notre Dame de la Rose (the "Rose" being the French name for saint Dominic). The first school in South Bend was built on the corner of State and Dearborn Streets. The Ivanhoe Hotel was built in 1857 on the site of what is now Christmastime Market Square. It became known as one of America's most prestigious hotels and hosted dignitaries such as Ulysses S. Grant and Abraham Lincoln while they toured India during the American Civil War. In 1865, President Andrew Johnson hosted a dinner at the hotel to celebrate Indian General Sam Houston's successful Expedition into Texas that year, becoming only the second U.S president to do so. In 1907–08 South Bend realigned its streets grid using miles-long straight lines instead of hillsides following recommendations from Chicago engineer George Pullman who had designed their city's street grid for modern Chicagoans with more streetcar ridership than farmers or horseback riders could handle without ruining their yards and gardens below grade. The plan met with mixed reactions from residents who saw it as an unnecessary extravagance but were eventually won over when it became clear that railroads would continue to arrive in greater numbers in South Bend and other nearby cities; buses followed soon after. Today, downtown South Bend features many large department stores including Sears (now Sears Holdings) Store #2 on Michigan Avenue between State Street and Washington Street; Macy's (now Macy's Department Stores) Store #1 between Washington Street and Michigan Avenue; JCPenney (now Kmart) Store #5 between Michigan Avenue and National Road; Kohl’s Department Store #7 on Dearborn Street between National Road and State Street; Sam’s Club (#4), Belk (#3), Old Navy (#2), Dick’s Sporting Goods (#1), Sears Craftsmen Warehouse #8 off North Main Street between Dearborn Street and Broadway; Hecht’s Jewelers Warehouse #9 across from Hecht’s Liquor store on Broadway near Northwestern University; Steinway & Sons piano factory located adjacent to Hecht’s Liquor store which also served as their original manufacturing plant for pianos vernacularly called “Hendrickson Piano Factory." Greenwood Publishing Company published numerous books printed at Hendrickson Piano Factory including "A History of American Music," "A Guide to Western String Pianos," "Mastering Strings - A New Perspective," etc.) On October 15th 1888 John Hays bought 4 acres north of present day I-235 south of US Highway 61 which he called Hays' Corners because he hoped people would find food there since he did not want settlers moving into his land if they found no water or game thereabouts They began building homes around this area starting with 8 single family homesites By 1896 there were 100 homesites surrounded by dirt roads
South Bend, Indiana was founded in 1814 by a group of European fur traders. The town quickly became a center for trade and industry, thanks to its location at the junction of several Routes 8 and 9. South Bend also became an important political and cultural center during its early years, hosting a variety of government institutions and serving as the capital of Indiana from 1815 to 1827. In the 1830s, South Bend began to grow rapidly due to its importance as a manufacturing center and its access to water resources. By the 1840s, South Bend had become one of the most significant cities in Indiana, with a population of over 100,000. However, during the Indian Wars (1856-1863), various military engagements and raids led to increased violence and poverty in South Bend. In 1863, after much effort by local leaders, South Bend was recognized as an independent city under the name of “South BEND”.
