Shelbyville is a small town in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,543 at the 2010 census. Shelbyville is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in Johnson County and was first settled in 1814. It is located on the west bank of the Kankakee River. The first European to set eyes on what is now Shelbyville was Capt. John Cline who landed his ship "John C." here on December 29th, 1814. He named it for his father-in-law, Seneca Allen (1784-1855). A post office called Shelbyville was established in 1815, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1888. In early 1816 an Indian band known as the Potawatomi attacked a settler party numbering about 20 men under the leadership of Chief Wyandotte. Five men were killed and 10 captured including two white men: William Henson (1770–1834) and Isaac Beiler (1781–1853). As a result of this attack upon Captain Cline's party some citizens took up arms against their Indian captors with results that are difficult to determine because no victuals or captives were taken by either side both camps retreated back into privacy without further harm done to either side. In 1798 Major John Butler arrived at Shelbyville from Greencastle with news that General George Washington had been elected President of America; he made haste to disembark his troops at this new site which he named after himself - Fort Butler - but foundered soon afterwards when news reached him of Washington's death just before he could land His squadron then consisting only of six boats manned by 100 soldiers rendezvoused near Peoria Indiana Territory where they built fortifications next door for 8 months before finally departing for Baltimore where they disembarked again March 2nd 1800 having accomplished nothing more than providing entertainment for 400 Americans who had gathered there pursuant to orders from General Wayne They left behind 200 women and children among whom we continued our settlements here until October 25th 1800 when hostilities broke out between us & the Shawnees resulting in 3 dead & several wounded our citizens immediately volunteered their services arraying themselves against those Indians forming what became known as The Frontier Battalion And so began our history as one community fighting side by side with Great Britain
