Shelbyville was founded in 1811 by federal landowner and fur trader David Hensley and was named for General John Shelby, who fought in the American Revolution. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the National Road, which connected Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania to Indianapolis. In 1836, US President Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from New York City to Indianapolis and renamed it Shelbyville after General John Shelby. The nearby village of White Sulphur Springs became a separate municipality in 1854. In 1871, cottonseed production began in earnest in what is now Shelbyville and surrounding areas; this led to increased demand for goods produced within the town limits. In 1916, local businessman Prentice Hinchman developed what would become known as "Hinchman's Woods" near downtown Shelbyville – this eventually became one of America's most important logging areas. By 1945, over 60% of all output from Indiana's white oak forests had been produced at Hinchman's Woods; today that figure stands at over 90%. During World War II much activity took place within Shelbyville due to its strategic location as an industrial center for production of munitions and other war-related products; many factories were built here during that time including Monsanto Company (now Bayer) and Ford Motor Company (now Chrysler). After the war ended, much decline followed as manufacturing switched back towards more traditional methods; however some remaining businesses such as Monsanto have continued operations until present day. Today, much attention is given to education within Shelbyvillians with both local schools and largerinderprises offering quality programs throughout the community while also fostering social responsibility through volunteerism - something which has helped keep the community vibrant through times of recession or economic hardship.
