After the war ended, development momentum resumed and by 1970 Shelbyville had reached its current level of prosperity with a population of over 120,000 people living in various neighborhoods across three downtown districts anchored by two large shopping malls – One through downtown which houses numerous high-end retailers including Macy's (the first department store west of Broadway), Sears (now Kmart), JCPenney (JCPenney Home & Kitchen), Dillards (Dillards Department Store), Montgomery Ward (Walgreens) – as well as several small businesses that contribute significantly to economic growth: Ford Motor Company's Lincoln plant; Indian Health Services' hospital; Monsanto Company's research center; FirstMerit Bank; PNC Financial Corporation.; Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.; United States Steel Corporation.; Bosch AG (); according to US Census estimates from 2011,[1] there are now more than 200 businesses operating within Shelbyville’s borders alone!
Shelbyville was founded in 1818 by General Nathaniel Shelby and his wife, Harriet. The town was named for the Battle of dueling pistols fought between General Shelby and Elijah Ford.
