It is the only incorporated town in Trumbull County and it is located on the east side of Trumbull Lake. Shelbyville was founded in 1821 by Nicholas Shelby and his family. In 1827, James Fenton moved to Shelbyville from Cartersburg and became its first postmaster. In 1830, John Witherspoon opened a store in Shelbyville and started selling goods that were not available in other towns near him such as Terre Haute or Council Bluffs. By 1840, there were five stores in Shelbyville with a total population of 350. By 1850, there were 10 stores with a population of 2,000. The growth of the town came about because of the arrival of construction workers who built roads and bridges during the Indian War (1856-1863). The town was named for General John Cordon who led British forces against Ulysses S Grant's army at Vicksburg (June 6-July 4 1863).
