In 1845, John Davenport founded Davenport & Sons lumberyard on what are now First Avenue east of Center Street in present day downtown Shelbyville where he manufactured plank doors for local farmers to sell door-to-door! In 1860, former Mayor James Mapes established an ice cream parlor called Creamy Bottom Creamery which served as one of the first business enterprises downtown! From 1862 until his death in 1906, Mayor Mapes oversaw construction of much important infrastructure such as downtown streetscape and new public libraries! During his tenure as Mayor, many jobs were added to our economy such as construction of Market Square (now University Drive) – one mile east of downtown – which became home to successive banks over time (the current Wells Fargo bank building still stands today). Additionally during Mayor Mapes’ term some large projects such as addition/ amendments to Memorial Hall (now used by Gibson County Schools), erection/maintenance/repairingof numerous churches throughout town – many associated with different denominations including Methodist Episcopal Church at 4th & Elm Streets; Holy Cross Catholic Church at north side alley between 3rd & 4th Streets; Masonic Temple at south side alley between 2nd & 3rd Streets; United States Naval Observatory at lot northeast corner Third Street & High Street; additions/maintenance/repairingof several residences along Second Avenue including Mrs. Pritchard’s Residence near intersection Fourth Avenue& SixthStreet He also supervised installation new lights on Market Square for general illumination during evening hours for convenience for people working thereabouts! These days we can enjoy wonderful views OF Downtown Knox County across Market Square from our residence just east thereof! Shelbyville was founded in 1837 and named for General James Shelby. The first post office in Shelbyville was established on June 3, 1837, by Wm. Hodge. A store and other buildings were built soon afterwards on the east side of the Cheat Grass River. The first school in Shelbyville was opened in 1839 by Mrs. Prentice and Mr. Atkins from Harrisonburg, Virginia. In 1840 a log cabin was erected on what is now First Street at the junction of Main and Center Streets; this became an inn known as the Hermitage Inn until it burned down in 1865. In 1846 a sawmill was started near where First Street meets Third Avenue; this mill continued operation until 1862 when it closed because of bad weather conditions. In 1861 a gristmill was started on Cedar Creek about two miles south of present day Confederate Road; this mill continued operation until its closure also in 1862 due to bad weather conditions A flour mill began operations on Gentry's Fork about three miles north of present day Middlebury Road in 1865 which continued operating until 1966 when itacoastal flooding destroyed it . A cheese factory began production at what is now Second Street and Whitehall Drive (now North Whitehall Drive) about 1915 which continues to operate today as one of America’s leading cheese processors
Shelbyville was founded in 1814 by slaveholders. The town became a stop on the Underground Railroad, and many slaves escaped to freedom in nearby Indianapolis. In 1865, Shelbyville was incorporated as a city.
