Shelbyville is a small town in Indiana, located on the east side of the state. The population was 3,075 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. The first settler in Shelbyville was John Shelby who built a cabin in 1824. By 1830, there were ten settlers living in Shelbyville. In 1832, two more settlers moved to Shelbyville from Greencastle and Vincennes and started a small grocery business. The following year saw the opening of what was then called "The House of Hope" which functioned as a hospital for local farmers during times of illness or injury. However, by 1840 only one inhabitant lived in Shelbyville; Benjamin Wesson. In 1847-8, three more families moved to Shelbyville from Terre Haute: Halsey, Weems and Richardson. This influx of new residents helped spark development within the community as people began to build homes and businesses on what would become known as "The Square." Over time more and more people chose to move into Shelbyvillians because it had good schools, churches and industries such as textiles and shoe manufacturing center around it making it an attractive place to live and raise families. In 1850 Isaac Sellars settled in Shelbyville with his family after leaving Fort Wayne due to religious differences with members of his church congregation over slavery legislation being passed by Congress at that time (the Fugitive Slave Act). After only six months living here he left for unknown reasons but his family remains forever memorialized with a plaque near The Square reading: "Isaac Sellars - Pioneer Settler Of Shelbyvillle". There have been several attempts over time by historians to locate Isaac's descendants but no success has yet been found! In 1851-2 nine additional settlers arrived from Decatur County including four brothers named Jenkins,-John Jenkins (1852-1907), James Jenkins (1853-1925), Hannibal Jenkins (1855-1937) & Noah Jenkins (1857-1946). By 1860 there were sixteen people living in ShelbyVILLE; eleven men & seven women plus children born between January 1st & December 31st each year! A post office was established at what is now called The Square on November 16th, 1854; soon after becoming one of many businesses opened along with groceries stores (Grains store - now JB HiLo) piano shop/orchestra room (& later occupied by Victory Dance Hall), Livery stable operated by Neely Brothers Horse News Barnstable Co., wagon workshop operated by Foreman Dixon Workshop Inc., blacksmith shop operated by Collins Bros., tailor shop run by Ritchie Bros., doctor's office operated by Drury dentist firm which became First Presbyterian Church on May 17th 1870 served until consolidation withEvansville Presbyterian Church on February 15th 1900 along with other public buildings erected during this period including jail & fire hall also included schoolhouse which served grades K thru 12 until torn down circa 1960s when all these buildings were razed for concrete conversion into high rise apartments! Today much of what once made up "The Square" still stands such as restored sidewalks leading away from main square today home to numerous restaurants & gift shops while most notable building standing remaining today is Masonic Temple which served as social hall when first established although recent damage makes entrance Impossible To Reach inside

In 1956, Shelbyville became an unincorporated community within Marion County. It remained an unincorporated community until 2002 when it became part of the city of Indianapolis. Today, there are several thousand residents living in Shelbyville including many who are descendants of early settlers such as those mentioned earlier.
Shelbyville was founded in 1837 by Levi Shelby and his family. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson, who fought in the War of 1812. In 1853, the town's first post office was established. The town saw a growth in population after it became a stop on the Indiana Central Railroad. In 1865, a schoolhouse and Methodist church were built in Shelbyville. A hospital opened in the town in 1888. In 1914, a new high school was built and named for Colonel John Saylor, who served as Mayor of Shelbyville from 1907 to 1914.
