Shelbyville is located on the south side of Clay County and east of Terre Haute. The first settler in Shelbyville was Abram Bryant who arrived in 1818. The community name originated from General John Shelby who fought against Native Americans in the American Revolutionary War. In 1834, James Waddell built a cabin here and named it after his father-in-law, General Andrew Jackson Waddell. From this point forward, many people called Shelbyville "Waddle Valley". In 1839, Carlisle Jones founded what became the largest cotton gin in America at Bignothingage just east of downtown Shelbyville. This gin produced 350 bales of cotton per week which helped spice up the local economy and make life easier for locals such as Anna Kappelman and their families who farm neighboring land to provide food for their families during these tough times. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated while attending a ball at Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C., setting off an entire decade of violence across America which soon left rural counties like ClayCounty struggling to keep up with urban demands for jobs and services that had become increasingly scarce as transportation improved throughout those years (the Great Migration). It is the smallest community in Butler County by land area and has the lowest population density of any municipality in the county. Shelbyville is located just east of Interstate 65 on State Road 5-962. Shelbyville began as a small agricultural settlement developed around 1853 by James Fenton and his family. The first post office was established in 1865, and the first store opened in 1867. By 1870, most of what is now Shelbyville had been built. The first school was built in 1872 and soon became an important stop on the route between Indianapolis and Chicago. In 1886, when Granger Township was created within Butler County, Shelbyville became its seat. In 1916, local farmers formed what would become the Agricultural Society of Shelbyville to promote agriculture among their constituents. A mill was started soon after to help support this effort; it remains active today as First National Milling Co.. A new courthouse was completed in 1927; it still serves as one of the village's main attractions today. The Village Green development opened up around 1960 which included a shopping center and several homes for residents to live in while they awaited redevelopment nearby which never happened due to lack of interest from developers or other factors like money worries that plagued many small towns during that time period
