Shelbyville is a town in Shelby County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Wayne metropolitan area. The first European settlers were Frenchmen who founded a trading post in what is now Shelbyville in 1795. The post was abandoned by 1800 and it wasn't until 1802 when General Anthony Wayne's army passed through the area on their way to battle with Native Americans that Europeans began to arrive in significant numbers. By 1810, there were over 60 residents living in Shelbyville and its environs. In 1818, following Indian Wars, the US government ceded most of present-day Shelbyville to Mexico as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and it became known as Santa Cruz de la Sierra de las Vegas (Church Hill). In 1827, General James K. Polk entered into an Agreement with Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna concerning western New Mexico Territory which includes present-day Shelbyville. On January 12, 1830 Father José Gomez established a mission at La Conchita del Cobre on the east bank of White River about three miles south of where modern day Shelbyville stands today. In addition to Mission San José el Grande on Topo Chico Creek located about two miles northeast of modern day Shelbyville; Father Gomez also established Mission Nuestra Señora de las Nieves (New Spain Missions) near present-day Speedway and Mission San Francisco El Amaro (Old Spanish Missions) just north of downtown while continuing east along Utopia Street towards what is now Dutchtown Township; these missions constituted all that remained from prior Mexican settlements within what is now Indiana’s current borders save for scattered Mormon settlements which took place during Governor William Prentiss' administration between 1840-1845 inclusive.. In 1835 land westward from Utopia Street including all that remains today's Dutchtown Township was granted by act of Congress to David Meredyth Dodge who had purchased it from Mexicans under similar conditions as those prevailing for other sections adjacent thereto including claims on White River (now Granger), Topo Chico Creek and Old Spanish Missions creek beds containing mineral rights dating back hundreds if not thousands years previously; thus making up almost one third or total acreage within later Indian Territory Grants made available through Act #33 & #34 dated December 3rd 1830 both Relative To Our Most Reverend Father José Gomez’ duly certified Donation Received At An Appointment With The Honorable David Meredyth Dodge Acting Deputy Surveyor Of Public Lands Under The Department Of State… This constitutes our Present Townsite & entire Streets And Valleys Within Its Limits Being Now Owned & Settled By Our Ancestors As Well As All Others Who Have So Far Placed Their Lives Hereabouts Including men Subject To Service In The Army Or Navy Today.. . clearly delineating boundaries between “present” town site and earlier grant lands would have been critical given how extensive white settlement had become across much ruralIndian Territory over time...As we know today many buildings still standing inside town limits - such as Baptist church built in 1927 - were constructed before actual incorporation occurred even though town platting did not take place until after voting results were tallied from November 5th 1865 thru December 10th 1865 resulting in 11 males ballots being cast vs 4 females ballots...It should be noted that vote totals for early township elections are often misrepresented due to changeable local political dynamics which can affect results at any time ranging from weeks leading up to election day itself

In 1848-49, General James Hays enlisted local merchant John Dorman to help him contact interested parties for purchasing land around Licking River which would become Indianapolis later that year. Dorman Later founded Dorman & Co., one of America's largest cottonseed merchants and served as mayor of Shelbyville from 1865-1868 and 1870-72. His son John Dorman Sr.—now known as John Dorman Jr.—was also one of America's most successful entrepreneurs during the late 19th century with his own steel business interests and holdings in numerous other enterprises including timber stocks and real estate development throughout central Indiana until his death at age 102 years old in 1984. In addition to his professional achievements as mayor and father figure to many people in Shelbyville—including future Ulysses S Grant—John Dorman Sr.'sJr also played an important role within American society by donating $5 million towards building what is now Mount Rushmore National Monument near Jefferson City, Missouri
