Shelbyville is a small town in the state of Indiana, United States. The population was 2,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Vandalia–Muncie–Weldon, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area. Shelbyville is located on the eastern edge of Pekin County and the central portion of Weldon County. The population was estimated to be 3,500 in 2000 but only 2,496 as of 2010. The first permanent settler in Shelbyville was James Denton who arrived around 1814. A post office called Shelbyville was established in 1827 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. settlers began arriving from Illinois and Kentucky at this time. By 1830 there were over 20 families residing in what is now Shelbyville. Development continued slowly until 1881 when a railroad connection was made between Indianapolis and Pekin County which led to increased business opportunities for the townspeople. In 1906, a branch line connected with the Chicago Central Railroad which brought new development within town limits as well as into neighboring towns such as Muncie and Vandalia. Since then, significant growth has occurred including major construction projects such as Interstate 70/Upper Michigan Boulevard eastward (the original route), replacement of many aging infrastructure items such as water mains and streetlights, and annexation by neighboring towns creating an even more urban-like feel to the community today; all while preserving most of its rural character

Shelbyville is a small town in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Shelbyville was French explorer Pierre- Jean Chaudière in 1795. He named it "Château de la Motte" after his landlord's estate in Normandy. The first settler in what is now Shelbyville was Nicholas Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti from Italy who arrived on a ship called the "Fortunate" on May 18, 1824. On November 12, 1830, Shelbyville became the seat of Johnson County when it was organized out of parts of Vanderburgh and Posey Counties. On December 15th, 1830 Abraham Lincoln made an address to the people of Shelbyville for the purpose of soliciting their support for his presidential candidacy against Andrew Jackson. In 1851-1852 David Fenton erected a sawmill which soon became one of the largest in Indiana due to its efficiency and quality production flooring products such as plank floors and shingles being produced here at an early date unheard of elsewhere even during this time period. In 1861-1862 Confederate General Braxton Bragg came through town on campaign trail visiting several Indian Territory settlements before finally reaching Johnson County on October 1st 1862 while en route to Vicksburg with 40 thousand troops as part as Union general Ulysses S Grant’s army across America’s theatre during the Civil War; he later offered land for settlement within Johnson County – some settlers took up this offer and founded Clarksburg adjacent to present day Shelbyville In 1878 Josephine Baker placed an order with Sears Roebuck & Co., Chicago for 100 feet wide by 50 feet deep “lumber block” two stories high that would be standard during her Stay at Home Restaurant days starting February 8th thru March 14th; these blocks were delivered dressed like store windows complete with hinged glass doors giving customers Entryway into each room all without having to go outside These lumber stores are believed still extant today especially if you wander off Main Street into Side Streets or back alleys where there has been extensive reconstruction over time almost alluding back to when these blocks stood For many years they have been stored inside what is now known as “Olde World Furniture Outlet” located just east off US 35 between I-465/I-465 South and Lee Road between SR 427 North and SR 9 South about 3 ½ miles west from downtown
Shelbyville was founded in 1814 by David Shelby and his family. The town became a county seat in 1847 and the name changed to Shelbyville, Indiana in 1890. In 1907, the city of Shelbyville merged with the neighboring village of Blackford to form a new municipality.
