Shelbyville is a city in and the county seat of Shelby County, Indiana, United States. The population was 21,612 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town site was laid out in 1824 by John Shelby and James Preston as a post office called "Harrison". In 1827, it was renamed to "Shelbyville" after General Andrew Jackson's victory over British forces at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in Ohio. In 1881, the name change to "Shelbyville", again after General Jackson's victory over Native Americans at Fallen Timbers. The city proper began formally chartered on January 1, 1889. The current name comes from a donation made by Mrs. Anna Crain Shelton in 1897 for use as an educational institution for girls named "The Shelbyville Female College". In 1907, American Tobacco Company established its own manufacturing plant in what is now downtown Shelbyville; this led to increased development around the plant and eventually led to annexation of nearby towns such as LaGrange and Vandalia by Shelbyville in 1912.
