Shelbyville is a small town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 4,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Wayne-Winchester, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Shelbyville was Abram Ewing who arrived in 1811. The town was platted on July 12, 1836 by Wm. Fenton and John Tipton under the name of “Hendersonstown”. A post office called Hendersonstown was established in 1837 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1865, Elijah Burch bought land east of Shelbyville and began to build a farm known as “Burch's Bottom” which eventually became residential areas today known as East Shelbyville and West Shelbyville neighborhoods. The community had a public school from its founding until it closed in 1953 when the county built its own school system. When Fort Wayne annexed Butler County on January 1, 1907, Shelbyville became an incorporated village with a Mayor/Council form of government under the new county laws. On November 3rd 1908 voters approved a charter for First Presbyterian Church located at 7th Street and Sherman Avenue with Rev J C Hirtz serving as pastor for over 60 years until his retirement on May 6th 2014; Mrs Edith Hirtz serving as our first female Pastor since incorporation into this great American democracy! On December 15th 1957 – just shy of 100 years after establishment of this fine community by Abram Ewing & others – we held our first Borough Election to elect officers for our newly formed borough government that would continue to serve us through all these many years including: Mayor/Councilman (J C Hirtz), Vice President (Bob Hecht), Treasurer (Edmund Peele) & Zoning Commissioner (Harry Siegel). Shelbyville is a town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 5,483 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muncie–Castle Rock, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shelbyville has been home to numerous small businesses and farmers since its establishment as a village in 1827. The discovery of coal in the area led to the growth of industry in Shelbyville and other nearby towns during the late 19th century and early 20th century. Today, Shelbyville remains an agricultural center with a strong focus on corn and soybean production. The town was founded by Nathaniel Stephenson in 1827 as a trading post on the confluence of both Whitewater Creek andthe River James. The site chosen for Shelbyville was on land that had been purchased from David Dixon by Stephenson's nephews, John Capps and Elijah Hillman. Coalmining arrived in earnest around this time, leading to an increase in passenger traffic along Whitewater Creek between Cincinnati and Indianapolis. By 1840, there were over 50 mines operating deep inside what is now Shelbyville Township; these operations were gradually phased out through the late 19th century as new methods of mining became available elsewhere throughout Indiana. Today, much of downtown Shelbyville consists of commercial buildings dating back to the 1920s built when railroadroads first extended into central Indiana from Chicago via Bloomington-Normal (then spelled Normal). In addition to downtown itself, several blocks south of First National Bank Building are three large vacant lots used for storage by various businesses which have not seen renewed development since before Interstate 495 cut through town center block after block beginning in the early 1990s
Shelbyville was founded in 1834 by a group of Methodist missionaries. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1875, the United States Post Office was established in Shelbyville and the town became an important transportation center for the area. The town continued to grow and by 1907 it had reached its present size.
