Shelbyville, Indiana is a small town in the U.S. state ofIndiana. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area and is located on the border of Marion County and Hendricks County. The name "Shelbyville" was given to it by General Andrew Jackson in 1814 as an honor to Colonel Shelby who had led a military expedition against Native Americans in that year. The village was organized on October 1, 1836, when settlers from neighboring towns of Dunkirk and Caldwell came to what is now Shelbyville with their families for the purpose of establishing a new town site on land donated by Peter Henderson. The first post office was established in this town on December 12, 1836; it operated under the name Caldwell until November 15, 1840. On July 6, 1839, James Hinton opened a store at present-day downtown Shelbyville and named it Henderson's Store after his benefactor. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Union forces burned down Henderson's Store and other buildings in Shelbyville for refusing to give up arms; however, most residents emerged unharmed from this attack except for one man who lost his homeseverely damaged by flames which he escaped without firefighters helping him. In 1872, cotton became an important commodity in Indiana and Tennessee due to growing demand from those states for Southern slave labor during Reconstruction. To increase production at its mills in downtown Shelbyville and elsewhere, the company built a massive new mill complex that included five large buildings and more than 500 acres of land. This project helped make Shelbyville one of the largest cotton-producing towns in America. The mill complex closed in 1984 but remnants of it can still be seen today (most notably around mile marker #1 on I-65). Additionally, some parts of the mill complex have been preserved as part of a museum called Old Mill Village which opened in 2002 near downtown Shelbyville.
