Its first post office was established in 1840. In 1847, the United States Census recorded 1,600 people living in Shelbyville. In 1880, industrialists John Daugherty and James Wirt founded the Daugherty-Wirt Paper Company which became one of America's leading paper companies. The company produced newspapers such as "The Indianapolis Star" (1881-present) and "The Cincinnati Enquirer". In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson dedicated a national park at Shelburne Grove near present day downtown Shelbyville to commemorate his visit there two years earlier when he toured America's coal fields with Secretary of Agriculture Clark Clifford. The park features 9 miles (14 km) of hiking trails, picnic areas and camping sites including an overlook overlooking Coal Mine Hill on State Road 12 east of town. During World War II Forrest Bunch worked at Ford Motor Company's Piquette Plant northeast of town while also serving as a UAW representative on local labor committees throughout Indiana; he later became president Ford's director of public works in Dearborn Heights MI before being elected governor of Michigan in 1974). Bunch is considered one of America's most important wartime workers and has been honored with various awards including Congressional Gold Medal (1948), National Medal of Technology (1977), Presidential Award for Distinguished Service (1981), Commander’s Crosses(1991), Knight’s Cross(1993). After his retirement from government service he moved to nearby Dearborn Heights where he continues to live today as an Emeritus Professor emeritus at Wayne State University; he also serves on many boards including those for the National Football League Players Association - NFLPA (2001-present), IMAX Corporation - IMAX Foundation USA Trustees Committee chairperson since 2002 (2002-present) and Myriad Genetics Incorporated - Myriad Genetics Chairman Emeritus Committees member since 2006

Shelbyville is a small city in the U.S. state of Indiana, located on the eastern bank of the Monon River. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. Shelbyville was founded in 1868 by James Shelby and his family as a manufacturing center for wagonloads of cornmeal that were being transported downriver from Illinois to Indianapolis. The city's name comes from General David Goliath who battled against Saul inJudah (I Samuel 17:14-21). The original home of the personal effects of General David Goliath, now part of the Shelbyville Museum, can be visited today. Other famous businesses in town include C&H Foods, which operates a grocery store and several restaurants; Ford Motor Company; and Sears Roebuck & Co., which opened its first store in 1912. In addition to its namesake manufacturer, other notable companies that have had their roots here include Allied Signal and Chrysler Corporation. In recent decades, Shelbyville has seen growth as a bedroom community for Indianapolis metropolitan area residents while also becoming known for its agricultural products such as soybeans and cotton. Today’s downtown district is one of America’s most vibrant cultural centers with more than 20 galleries, theaters and performance venues including The Belknap Center for American Studies at Vanderbilt University and First Congregational Church; two golf courses - Ponte Vedra Park Golf Course (www.pvgcgolfclub) just south of town on State Route 63 south of Interstate 465; several antique dealerships including Jiffy Lube & More; four local breweries - Allagash Brewing Company (www.allagashbrewingcompany), Three Floyds Brewery (www2floyds), Goose Island Brewery (www.gooseisland) - all within minutes’ drive or less by car or public transportation; five miles east of town is Indian Hill Park Racetrack with over 1 million square feet (910 m²) available for housing development – an opportunity not likely to be found elsewhere in this rural area
The city of Shelbyville was founded in 1825 and was named after General John Shelby, who fought in the American Revolution. The city grew rapidly during the 1800s and by 1870, it had a population of over 100,000. In 1907, the city incorpored charter as a municipal corporation and became one of the first cities in Indiana to be governed by a mayor-council system. The present day municipality was created from parts of several other small towns within Shelbyville during the early 1900s.
