Shelbyville is a small town in Pike County, Indiana, United States. The population was 4,776 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1825 as a log cabin community by General John Shelby and his family. The first post office in Shelbyville was established in 1827. In 1831, the village of Shelbyville became an incorporated town with a railroad station and sawmill. In 1862, Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Indiana from Tennessee and occupied most of the state; Shelbyville remained unoccupied until April 9th when Union forces arrived to retake the town. By 1865, all but one house had been destroyed by fire during the war. The only building left standing was a Baptist church which reopened in 1870 after being rebuilt using local lumber and stone. In 1924, the original locomotive factory complex (now known as "The Factory") on Third Street near State Road 516 was built by United States Steel Corporation to produce locomotives for their Indianapolis division of US Steel Company's nationwide network of plants. It served as production headquarters for many years before it closed its doors in 1984 due to economic conditions within steel manufacturing industry worldwide. Today, only one remaining portion of this once imposing structure remains: The former engine housing garage that housed two UP 6-wheelers used for storage during fabrication process until 1985 when they were scrapped due to age & wear & tear issues with other machines at plant; see photo below). Since its establishment as a small town located within easy reach of larger Evansville communities through rail transportation and highway access, ShelbyVILLE has experienced significant growth both internally and externally over time - primarily attributable to its location within close proximity to major employers like US Steel Corporation and Evansville University - both providing ample opportunities for commerce, education and employment opportunities alike!
