Shelbyville is a small town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 1,835 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shelbyville was named after General John Shelby, who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention. The first residents of what is now Shelbyville were farmers and their families who lived on farms around present-day Main Street and Elmwood Avenue. They arrived during the late 18th century when large areas of central Indiana were still under Indian control. By 1800, most of what is now Shelbyville had been developed as a logging town because of its excellent timber resources. In 1853, a group of merchants from Terre Haute founded a town called North Bend on the south bank of the White River near modern day Lafayette (then known as New Lebanon). The goal was to become an important commercial center for eastern Indiana due to its rich natural resources. However, North Bend failed to grow beyond a few hundred people and eventually fell apart in 1857. In 1859, General John Shelby decided to settle in central Indiana and purchase land east of Terre Haute for his own ranching operation which he named “Hickory Hill” after his friend and neighbor Colonel Elijah Hickory (1790-1866), one of India’s most significant landowners prior to British annexation. As development progressed along I-65 northward from Indianapolis through what is now Jennings County into Trumbull County, General John’s holdings grew increasingly larger until he finally sold all but two thousand acres (800 hectares) including much of today's Townships 3 & 4 - which became known collectively as "Shelbyville." During General John's lifetime there were only about fifty or so people living permanently in Shelbyville; however by 1865 over three thousand residents had settled there making it one of America's largest towns by 1870 despite having only 2 square miles (5 km²) worth (~100 people)of indoor space! The increased populationgrowth led to increased infrastructure needs such as streetlights, drains/pumps etc., that required construction over time culminating with new schools/medicine buildings being built throughout downtown during World War II followed by other larger civic projects like replacing water mains and building roads etc.. Today we can see evidence that city planning efforts well before then went into effect when streetscapes changed dramatically with brick vaults replaced with more recent architecture while entire neighborhoods have gone through similar changes!
