Shelbyville is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana that is located on the eastern edge of the Kosciusko County metropolitan area. The population was 9,563 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis–Marion, IN-Wabash, IN-Fort Wayne, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shelbyville has a history dating back to 1814 when it was called "New Harmony". In 1851, its name was changed to "Shelbyville" after General Andrew Jackson's visit there and its first post office opened in that year. The community had a population of 10 inhabitants in 1860 and 12 citizens in 1870; however, by 1880 it had declined to 6 residents and 2 postmasters due to increasingattoings within Kosciusko County as well as elsewhere in Indiana. However, by 1890 it had again increased to 14 residents due to new development within the township including an cotton gin and other textile mills which began operating nearby during this time period. In 1907, Shelbyville became one of three townships within Kosciusko County formed from portions of Hendricks Township (now West Goshen). This change came about because original boundaries for Kosciusko County were based on Indian land grants rather than township boundaries which would have placed much more emphasis on agriculture than industry or commerce. As a result of this reorganization, Shelbyville lost much of its agricultural acreage but gained some commercial acreage that continues today outside the limits set for it by county officials. After World War II ended and many people left for various reasons such as jobs overseas or moving away from rural lives into larger cities during the postwar boom years, census data shows that Shelbyville's population continued decreasing until reaching 7 residents in 1970 before increasing slowly through 1980 with 11 residents Census taken thereafter until reaching 9th district’s current size with 8 occupants only 1 decade ago! Additionally since 2000 most households have consisted onlyof family members so small businesses are not typical features here anymore….. Polk and his brigade marched through Shelbyville to visit General Andrew Jackson at Fort Harrison. After their visit, Polk praised the town for its bravery and military prowess. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army passed through Shelbyville on their way to Memphis. General Ulysses S. Grant's army fought an important battle near Shelbyville in that year; however, it is not known if any Battle of Shelbyville took place. In 1907, Ford Motor Company founded its factory in downtown Shelbyville after opening a new plant in Corydon Township two years earlier. The company employed over 1,000 workers at its initial location before expanding into other parts of Indiana and Ohio that year alone. In 1961-63,[5] the city hosted the Indianapolis 500 race as part of World Fair '62 (the first time an Indy car race had been held in Indiana). The race was one of several events staged throughout India and Pakistan during that year's edition of Expo '62 which also included Delhi (then called Chandigarh), Karachi (then called Quetta), Lahore (then called Agra), Peshawar (then called Multan) and Rawalpindi (now Islamabad).
