Shelbyville is a small town in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,052 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville–Muncie–New Albany metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1814 by James Shelby and his wife Martha as a trading post on the Wabash River. In 1846, it became a village when the eastern half of Johnson County (then west-central Johnson County) was organized. The original plat for Shelbyville included land that still makes up the core of town. In 1881, an act of Congress designated "Shelbyville" as the site of Indianapolis' new municipal government and city hall. The first post office in Shelbyville was established in 1814 and served until it closed in 1865 due to lack of mail service to the community from nearby Evansville. The current post office opened on December 12, 1903, with John Auld as first USPS secretary. In 1906, Shelbyville annexed part of neighboring New Albany; this annexation created what is now known as the City of EvansVILLE annexation district which has jurisdiction over all aspects outsideof Town limits within Township 1E including but not limited to: water rights & sewerage services; zoning ordinances; parks & recreation; etc., essentially giving city government control over most aspects within Town Limits except for school board members who are Montgomery Township residents while also having township elections Click here to read more about that annexation

Shelbyville is a city in Shelby County, Indiana, United States. The population was 3,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settler in Shelbyville was David Dickey in 1810. The town was platted in 1824 and named for General Andrew Jackson's daughter, Sarah Shelby. A post office called Shelbyville was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The city of Shelbyville was founded on December 15, 1857 by James Hines and others from nearby Anderson Township. In 1860, the site of present-day downtown became part of the new town after a US Congress resolution passed to annex land east of I-465 between Harrison and Perry streets to create what would become Shelbyville. The townsite contains many historical sites including Old Log Cabin (now a museum), First Presbyterian Church (1902), and Piggly Wiggly restaurant (now an auto dealership). In 1865, John Fenton opened his grocery store at what is now Fourth Street and Jefferson Avenue. Over time he expanded into other businesses including foundry production beginning with an oven designed by his brother-in-law Jno.[1] This business model continued through World War II when Fenton manufactured artillery shells for America's war effort; however as aluminum prices plummeted during that time most operations closed except for occasional sales to collectors until he retired in 1957[2]. By then much of Historic Downtown had been destroyed by fire or neglect but some rebuilding began shortly thereafter with help from volunteers under guidance from then Mayor Don Burchfield who touted the potential for revitalization along Elmira Road which bisected downtown before meeting its current form near eastbound I-465 just south of State Fairgrounds Road where there are now more than 100 businesses anchored around three large central Plaza areas anchored by two Barnes & Noble stores anchors one across Riverfront Drive/Highway 465formerly home to Sears/Kmart anchor AutoZone also several IHOPs restaurants Ford dealerships various medical offices etc... ensuing growth resultedinderdowntownpioneer buildings rearward facing onto courtyardsonthefreeways with high rises above them former factories clustered together along riverfront providing excellent views both north towards I-465and south towards Fort Wayne
