When American soldiers invaded Mexico in 1846, they were not sure what kind of ammunition they would need. Ammunition was a scarce commodity at the time and most of what was available had been used up in previous wars. The infantryman needed a wide variety of munitions to be effective, so Capt. James H. Winchester developed the first Metallic Cartridge Company cartridge for the rifle in 1857. The Union army also developed their own ammunition for the rifle during this time period as well. The first round created by Samuel Colt was an Improvement on the British Pattern 7mm/.58 Rifle Round. This round featured aproximately .50 caliber bullet that traveled at 535 feet per second (175 meters per second). As technology improved and demand increased for new rounds, Winchester continued to develop new types of ammunition while Colt produced more patterns and rounds specific to rifles such as the Model 1886 revolver. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided he needed new ammo to fight his war against George Buell’s Union army using cannons known as siege guns or “ mortar fireters” which could only fire cast iron balls with a range of around 30 yards (25 meters). To provide enough firepower for these cannons, Ewell ordered his artillerymen to start stockpiling reloadable cartridges called “cannon balls” which had about two-thirds of an inch (.27 meter) diameter hole bored through them like ordinary bullets but with white powder inside making them incendiary rather than explosive like other rounds. These cannon balls were fired from long tubes that looked like water pipes and caused great destruction when fired over open trenches intoUnion positions during the Siege of Petersburg on April 14th 1865 leading directly to General Buell’s surrender!
