Shelbyville is a town in Shelby County, Indiana, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1836 by General Zachariah Sumner and his family. In 1854, the name was changed to Shelbyville after General Stephen Shelby, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. The first settlers were people from British Columbia who came overland through Canada and landed on what is now called Point Pleasant Township on November 11, 1836. Other early pioneers included John Gibson and his wife Ann (née Willis). They located a farm on what is now Business Loop Road and built their homes around a log cabin they named "Doris". At that time only three other families lived in this area: those of George Beattie (later Duchman), James Hoadly (later Kenney) and John Whitehead (later Whitehead). The first schoolhouse in Shelbyville was built in 1840 by Mrs. Anna Fenton as part of her land grant to Drury School District No 7. When it closed for lack of students, Mrs. Fenton donated her entire acreage to be used as a public school site which became known as "Fenton's Field" or simply "Fenton." The building still stands today and serves as the town center annexe for Shelbyville Schools but has been renovated several times since its construction including most recently in 2003-2004 when it received an award from the Indiana State Department of Education for its innovative use of energy efficient features such as solar heating/cooling systems and geothermal heating/cooling systems A post officecalled Fenton until 1861 when it became known as "Shelbyville." On July 1, 1865, both towns merged into one under the name "Shelbyvil

Today's Shelbyvillians are proud of their community's past but equally alarmed at what it means for future generations. They know that while their town has experienced some big moments - like becoming one of central Indiana's largest commercial centers during prohibition times or being part of the local area that produced President Ronald Reagan - there have also been some tough times including floods in 2009 that displaced over 50 families; layoffs at nearby Carrier plants during 2007-2009; high taxes resulting from suburbanization throughout central Indiana over the last few decades;and rapid population growth around Interstate 65 which has squeezed available housing options within reach for people who want them - all while still facing challenges like lack of open space near schools or infrastructure improvements needed to handle increased traffic levels caused by new development adjacent to I-65W
Shelbyville was founded in 1814 by James Shelby and his wife, Margaret. The town became a post office in 1827 and first incorporated as a city in 1868. In 1907, the city merged with nearby Decatur to form the current municipality of Shelbyville.
