Seymour, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana. The population was 794 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Seymour was founded in 1821 by James Seymour and his family. The first post office was established in Seymour on November 3, 1821. In 1861, the community incorporated as a village and it remained an unincorporated community until its incorporation into the city of Terre Haute in 1987. The history of Seymour begins with James Seymour who settled here in 1821 after migrating from England. He and his family started a corn mill which operated until 1835 when he built a sawmill and grain elevator that remain basic landmarks today. From this business, James also began to purchase land for settlement including what is now the current townsite. By 1830, he had erected three homes and two churches - one Congregationalist and one Baptist - all of which still stand today within walking distance of each other on Center Street between State Road 901 (now US-27) and State Road 812 (now I-465). This early growth initiated what would be an enduring tradition of religious diversity in this rural community with several congregations maintaining their ministries even as far away as Merrillville where there are currently active churches affiliated with more than 20 annual services! In 1865, following Union victory over Confederate forces at Bull Run, settlers emigrated to Seymour from throughout central Indiana under the leadership of Jeptha Seymore who had served as captain in Company K9th Infantry Regiment during the war years. With General John Pemberton's proclamation offering free land to those who surrendered their swords or property theretofore held by Confederates, many individuals chose to move westward rather than fight another pitched battle! As word spread about General Pemberton's offer, many people arrived at Seymour looking for vacant lots or simply new beginnings after serving their Confederate captors! Many families also brought livestock with them such as horses & mules then used for seasonal plowing operations on newly developed farmland! Today much of that original 1863 farmstead remains housing units dating back to around World War II - see photos below! During Reconstruction days following the Civil War, various businesses were begun within soon afterward including a bakery (1868), livery stable (1870), grocery store (1872), post office (1873), hardware store (1874), blacksmith shop & forge (1875), schoolhouse/church building(s) (1877-87), photographer (& film company) studio (& equipment) (!important note: these buildings have since been demolished); diagnostic lab; metal fabricator; auto parts manufacturing plant (& Equipment) !!! !!! !!! !!! !!! !!!!!!!!! In comes automotive parts manufacturing plant Valvoline Manufacturing Company headquartered here circa 1960s !! Many residents relocated back east during this time period but downtown continued growing due to heavy demand from local businesses for workers during various industrial expansions throughout late 19th century Indianapolis etc...... factories expanding rapidly requiring increased production volumes caused pollution problems not just downtown but outlying neighborhoods too....... easterners moved out en masse leaving behind high priced brickbuilt homes & uppity social attitudes
Seymour, Indiana was founded in 1824 by Isaac Seymour and his wife, Rachel. The first settler in the area was Moses Morse. In 1828, a post office was established at Seymour. The town's first store opened in 1830. By 1840, Seymour had a population of 10 people. In 1854, the Union Pacific Railroad arrived in the area and soon Seymour became one of its key stops. In 1861, Seymour became a state-chartered city and remained so until it merged with Terre Haute into that city in 1970.
