Seymour, Indiana is a town located in the far west side of the state of Indiana. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It lies on U.S. Route 13 south of Terre Haute and north of Evansville. Seymour is known for its scopes, including two that are on display in the Seymour Museum. The first scopes to be made in Seymour were glass instruments used by hunters to see game in difficult to reach areas. In 1859, an Italian immigrant named Antonio Crivelli founded a company called optics firm Crivelli & Sons which manufactured telescopes and microscopes throughout the Midwest United States until it folded in 1907. The first telescope on display at the Seymour Museum is a 1859 Schmidt-Cassegrain by Antonio Crivelli and it measures 66 feet long and 24 feet wide with a parabolic mirror measuring 33 feet across at its widest point. In 1925, Jules Bloch invented an instrument that became known as a binocular microscope or “bloomer” because it could be rotated so that light would enter from both eyes simultaneously into one image plate or eyepiece creating what was then considered an elongated object or bloom. Seymour, Indiana was founded in 1853 by Nathaniel Seymour and his wife Hester. The town was named for General George Washington Seymour, who had fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill. In 1881, two years after the Indian Removal Act made Oklahoma a part of the United States, Seymour's father-in-law and namesake, General Nathaniel Seymour bought 4,000 acres north of town to build a new home. The family used their land to rear horses and cows until 1917 when they donated 5,000 more acres to the town for use as an open space. The city hall is also located on this property.

The population peaked at 17,000 in 1960 and declined to 12,500 by 1970. In 2000-2001 there were no reports of any population growth within the boundaries of Seymour since then. However residents continue to rely on various businesses located within walking distance including a grocery store (GroceryMart), a tire store (TireCorp), a medical center (MedStar Health System), two schools (Seymoure High School & Olivet Nazarene University) as well as many churches which are also locally affiliated with their respective denominations
