Seymour is a small town in the Miami County, Indiana area. It is located on the east bank of the White River, about two miles south of its junction with the Kankakee River. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. The Seymour post office was established in 1868 and continued operation until it was discontinued in 1915. The first settlers in Seymour were James Fenton and his family who arrived in 1837 from Ohio. In 1839 they built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it after their new home state, Illinois. James Fenton's son-in-law Jacob Hennigan also settled here around this time and operated a general store which prospered for many years before being destroyed by fire in 1881. In 1865 German immigrant Wilhelm Pohlman moved to Seymour from Wabash County, Indiana and erected a frame house on what is now Elm Street. He later purchased land east of Main Street where he developed a corn farm which he called "Pohlmans Prairie" (later renamed "Seymour"). In 1902 Wilhelm Pohlman passed away leaving his extensive land to his son Charles Pohlman Jr., who had it developed into an agricultural subdivision known as "Pohlmans Township". It should be noted thatCharles Pohlman Sr.'s father never lived to see his holdings develop into what they are today; he died at the age of 86 years old on October 5th, 1957 after a long battle with cancer). In 1907 local school superintendent J B Floyd built a one-room schoolhouse on what is now Third Avenue which served Seymour through most of the 20th century. A second one-room school opened in 1945 but closed due to lack of students; this building still stands today next door to First Presbyterian Church (now Christ United Methodist Church). Ultimately both schools were replaced by more modern structures when Seymour became an independent village formed under Section 9(a) of the 1920 Indiana Constitution In 1965 local resident Lloyd Weems donated land across from First Presbyterian Church for use as an open air recreational groundknown then as "Weems Park". This park would eventually become known as "Seymour Recreation Area" (now part of White Sands Lakefront Resort & Casino). Morris Hite played professional football for three seasons withthe Indianapolis Colts during the late 1800s; during one such visit to Seymour he completed some football drills on Weems Park which led directly to him signing autographs for fans outside North Stadium later that day! After World War II Seymour became known as one of America's post war boomtowns thanks largely to its participation in both federally funded programs such as Project HOME and Interstate Highway 25 which connected various farming communities across the Midwest including Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee etc.; these developments also helped contribute toward downtown redevelopment once again becoming highly visible throughout much of central Indiana over subsequent decades culminating with construction beginngn late 2007/early 2008 surrounding downtown core completely rebranding/. As Moody's Investors Service aptly put it: ". . . Many people believe that high economic activity has resulted not only because businesses have been expanded but also because Saurveys young residents have embraced opportunities available within their community." Despite all these positive developments however there has been occasional static growth or decline throughout recent decades attributable primarily to factors such as changes within local employment markets or generally softening real estate values especially following global recessionary conditions
