Seymour, Indiana is a small town located in the state of Indiana. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. The ZIP code for Seymour is 47617. Seymour is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Seymour was John Peterson who arrived in 1814. In 1815, two more settlers, David and William Hennepin, also moved to Seymour from Onondaga County, New York. By 1830 there were ten residents living in Seymour. By 1840 there were twenty-four people living in Seymour. In 1851 the village of Seymour was platted and named after General George Averill Sherman, United States Army during the American Civil War (1861-1865). General Sherman had been awarded an honorary degree by the University of Michigan in 1861 for his role as CommandingGeneral Northwest Territory District9th Infantry Division during that campaign which ended with his death on March 14th 1865 at age fifty-six years old near Peoria, Illinois due to disease contracted while fought north of Springfield IL). On December 6th 1901 a fire destroyed most of the village center leaving only a few buildings standing today including jail and post office building which are still used as business offices today! The new town hall was built on land donated by Mr./ Mrs.(?) Waddell and dedicated on December 9th 1902 following their endowed fund drive called "The Paint Can Cure Everything" which raised over $10 000! That same year Indianola Township came into being with its own incorporation paperwork on January 1st 1903 when it merged with Seymour Village & School District #2 effective February 3rd 1903 making “Seymour” one entity again! vernacularly known as simply “Seymour” until 1907 when it became official name once again - just like our beloved General George Averill Sherman himself! As you can see from this timeline things did move around a bit but one thing remained constant - we loved our little hometown! We have many memories of growing up here including all those big family gatherings down at Cottonwood Lake where we would go ice fishing or fishing tournaments etc., playing baseball or basketball out on Pleasant Prairie Lake or taking drives along South Main Street to visit friends if they happened to be visiting us during that season; heck even some folks joined us back then – like my maternal grandparents who lived right next door until they passed away in 2000 at age ninety five (and I still miss them!). It really couldn't have come at a better time – right before everything started changing around here! Today we enjoy all types of events such as farmers markets throughout the weekdays starting late morning through late afternoon; concerts held downtown every other Saturday night; twice per month art shows happening either outdoors or inside depending on what's going on; antique sales usually take place at least once each month; plenty of restaurants within walking distance including several Chinese places close by as well as several Italian places not far from town limits; major league sports teams playing regularly both locally and occasionally away games across state lines so you never know what kind of entertainment will be available nearby no matter where you are seated…… well okay maybe not always but typically pretty much something happening SOMEWHERE!!!! 🙂

In 1839, the village of Seymour had a population of just 10 people. By 1850, the population of Seymour had grown to 95 people and the village had a school and depot. The first railroad to reach Seymour was built in 1856 and the town became an important stop on the Railroadtown line. The population of Seymour grew rapidly during the 19th century and by 1900 it had increased to 478 people. In 1920, Seymour voters approved an ordinance that limited day-to-day operations to one business until a new store could be built. By 1930, Seymour had become an all-night shopping center with a variety of businesses including two banks, four stores, six grocery stores, three sheet music stores and several restaurants. In 1939, after World War II ended and America entered into its own depression, Seymour's economy changed as new businesses began opening up in the town: two hospitals (one for veterans), three auto factories (including one that produced Stutz cars) and five shoe factories produced jobs for local residents during this time period. By 1960, when American culture shifted again towards baby boomers as they experienced their first childrenbearing years motel chains started opening up throughout America which eliminated many factory jobs leaving townspeople struggling along with their families
