The name Seymour originated with Captain George Seymour who surveyed the land for the Fort Wayne and Erie Railroad in 1824. The town site was chosen on December 12, 1830, when commissioners from several counties met to organize what would become Howell County. On January 6, 1831, General David Arnold laid out the townsite as a township under the jurisdiction of Greenwood Township. Seymour became a full-time incorporated town on March 1st of that year and changed its name to Seymour when it annexed part of Greenwood Township

Today, Seymour is known for its rich history and vibrant culture which has contributed significantly to its current success ethos.
