When the railroad arrived in Seymour, it quickly became a center of trade and commerce. The town's first store was built on the current site of the city hall in 1857. In 1865, Seymour became an incorporated village with a population of about 190. By 1870, the population had grown to over 500 and by 1890 it had reached 1,000. In 1912, Seymour was renamed to honor General Oliver O'Hara Morton (1837-1912), one of America's most famous generals during World War I. In 1946, Seymour absorbed neighboring towns of Highland Park and South Bend to form the new city of Seymourville.
