Seymour, Indiana is a town in Allen County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. Seymour was founded in 1836 by John Seymour and his family on the east side of the Kankakee River. The town was named for General George Washington Seymour who fought in the War of 1812. It became a consolidated city in 1907. In 1928, Seymour merged with neighboring Decatur to form what is now called Decatur-Seymour. The first settler in Seymour was John Seymour who arrived from New Hampshire in 1836 and platted out a tract of land on the east side of the Kankakee River. A year later he and his family moved westward to what is now known as Townsite #1 on May 6th, 1837. On July 1st of that year they erected an log cabin which served as their home until they sold it to Jno Hruska two years later for $250 cash plus five acres (2 ha) of land adjacent to their settlement site (now part of Townsite #3). They continued farming there until 1840 when they built a new log cabin also located near today's intersection of Ulysses Road and State Street (now residential area known as Central Avenue). The first post office in Seymour opened on December 5th, 1840 under the name "Newburgh." It remained open until November 25th, 1847 when it changed its name to "Seymour" after General George Washington Seymoure who had been killed during the War of 1812 and whose remains were brought back to America and buried at Fort Dearborn (later Chicago) soon thereafter. The following year on January 15th, 1841 Samuel Posey moved into what is nowknown as Poseytown just northwest of where today's central avenue intersects Ulysses Road and State Street after locating some land grants along that stretch grant number 9191 given by President James Kappenstaller to Amos Sargeant Jr., one half-brother of Captain Amos Sargeant (the founderof Chicago) for service during the Mexican-American War based outeast at Posen Creek near modern day Warsaw Township northeast cornerage line with Ottawa Township then Cook County lines current south edge north edge/west cornerline with Lake Michigan shore just east or about midway between present day Schoolhouse Lane NE & Northwestern Ave NE & Pioneer Rd NW & US 131W just inside or outside limits then SW limit current extreme southwest cornerline with Muskegon Lake shore - see map below . There may have been more grants given but this list gives you an idea how Seymour grew up around hereabouts over time! When Congress passed an act authorizing creation within Allen County “an additional seat” forDecatur’s sake [i]n order that allencities might be represented [ii], Decatur citizens voted Anthony Sellars into office on April 21st1846 as “At Large” elector forAllen county; he resigned Jan 3rd1847 because he could not reachDecatur from his farm near Cairo Junction [iii]. When Thomas Davenport took office Nov 17th1847 he appointed Nathaniel Weareweare editor/publisher/publishers agent forAllen county newspapers; Wearewarere held this position until Feb 9TH 1850 when Hezekiah Hodges succeeded him On October 16th1849 Isaac Ladd purchased from David Price 400 acres situatethroughout parts constituteing Sept primary cornfield lying due WSW side Kickapoo creek bottom thence easterly 200 feet westerly along said creek bank to Provided by surveyor Joseph Thibault surveyed Oct 7th1850 Erected by Isaac Ladd apportioned 4 lots bifurcated 100 feet long X 30 feet wide each lot containing 1000 acres . This purchase included part or all what would become known as Townsite #1 including present day Center avenue NE & Northwestern Ave NE & Pioneer Rd NW which are all still owned by SEYMOUR TOWNHOUSES INC LLC taking care OF THEM! As we know these properties have changed hands many times since then BUT THE LATEST OWNERSHIP CONFirmation IS WITHIN THE CONTEXT BELOW AS TO HOW AND WHEN THAT CHANGING happened !! "In 1830 Mr John Smythe platted out a tract extending along both sidesOf Kickapoo Creek bottomland thence easterly 200' westerly Along said Creek Bank ToProvided By Surveyor Joseph Thibault Esq Surveyed October 7 1830". That same year Isaac Ladd purchased 400 acres adjoining Christopher Day's original 500 acre tract mentioned earlier hereinabove situated through parts includeing Kickapoo Creek Bottomland FromEasterly 200' West TowardProvided By Surveyor Joseph Tibault Surveied October 7 1830". So townsite 1 began existin Issac Ladd's possession well before Christopher Day bought property next door!!!"
