Seymour, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana. The population was 3,777 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Seymour was founded in 1836 by C.F. Brown and his brother-in-law, Owen Gentry. Seymour was named for General James Seymour who fought in the War of 1812. The first post office in Seymour opened on December 1, 1837. In 1851, it became a county seat and remained so until 1906 when it became an unincorporated community within Jasper County.[1] The first industries that located here were agriculture and manufacturing; however, today most residents are engaged in agriculture or marketing their products to neighboring counties or states. Farming has been the primary industry here since early times with many families holding land rights dating back to before Indian Removal Act of 1830 which led to the displacement of Native Americans from what is now central Indiana[2]. Today there are five main crops grown: corn (maize), soybeans, cotton (the most important crop after Corn), wheat/eastern rice/millet/wheat germ oilseed production and potatoes;[3][4] all but one being processed into some form or another by local businesses either directly or through contracted processors[5]. Seymour started as a small farming village with about twenty homes built between 1840 and 1845[6][7][8]. The Village later developed into a large town with over 4500 residents by 1910 according to US Census report[9], having grown rapidly due to its location midway between Indianapolis and Terre Haute on both sides of I-65 corridor as well as its rich agricultural history dating back to over 100 years ago! In addition to its burgeoning agricultural economy, Seymour also became known for its significant manufacturing sector during this time period; including engines, bicycles, cars etc.; making it one of the very few townships in central Indiana that experienced rapid growth throughout much of the 20th century!dominated largely by heavy industry such as automobiles,[10][11] textiles,[12] printing presses etc.; until recently remaining largely unchanged despite repeated economic challenges posed by both global competition and technological advances! This progressivism can be seen across all aspects of life here - from Main Street's wide arrays of locally made items such as flowers and baked goods,[13],to more recent additions like a library (opened in 2006) serving as an important resource for locals & visitors alike!
Seymour, Indiana was founded in 1814 by the Potawatomi Tribe. It became a county in 1846 and a town in 1872. In 1903, it was renamed Seymour after the first settler. The population of Seymour was 5,837 at the 2010 census.
