Seymour, Indiana is a small town located in the eastern part of the state of Indiana. The population was 1,551 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Seymour comes from two early pioneers in this area: George Seymour and his son-in-law, Hiram Bates. George's brother James also settled here in 1819. The first post office in Seymour opened on October 12, 1826. By 1830, there were seven post offices in the community. In 1881, the railroad arrived and changed the center of town from a village to an incorporated town with its own government. The population had grown to 2,500 by 1920 when it reached 3,000 residents for only one year before declining back to 2,500 by 1930 due to World War II and other economic factors. Seymour has always been an agricultural community with a focus on corn and soybeans production. For many years it was one of the most important wheat producing communities inIndiana because of its high soil productivity and long growing season which allows for large crops despite Mother Nature's seasonal fluctuations." In recent years cheese production has become more popular here as well due to nearby Dairy Queen cheesemaking operations

The Seymour community is located in the northwestern corner of central Indiana, about halfway between downtown Indianapolis and Fort Wayne. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. The town started as a small farming community on the east bank of the White River, just upstream from where it joins the Little Miami River. In 1892, Seymour acquired land to the north and east of its current location on what is now U.S. Highway 10 near I-465 and State Road 46. By 1910, most of what is now Seymour had been developed as a small town with a population of around 800 people. In 1922, when US Highway 10 was rerouted through town, Seymour's main street became portions of both US Highway 12 and US Highway 25 which crossed over from Terre Haute into Seymour then continued south to I-465 in Hammondsville. In 1953, when local leaders decided that they would like to move their municipal government out of city limits and into their own town square (known today as "The Square"), they formed a committee to develop plans for doing so. On October 14th, 1953, citizens voted by an overwhelming margin in favor of having their municipality move into its ownsquare - even though at that time there were no plans for it to happen! The first meeting following this vote was held on November 3rd and within two months all but one member (the mayor) had joined forces with other similar towns in neighboring cities in order to form what would become known as "The City Council" or "The Mayor's Association". After several years of organization and planning including trips to other cities for inspiration (including Cleveland), The City Council moved into its new building on December 9th 1955 - becoming operational under the name "Seymour." Since then things have only gotten better for Seymour! Not only has our municipality experienced rapid growth due primarily to annexation by other municipalities but also because we have been able to provide high quality services such as parks & recreation; public education; fire protection; water supply; trash collection; ambulance service; etc.; we have managed not only keep up with modern trends but also continue making progress towards being recognized as one of central Indiana's leading communities! Seymour, Indiana was created in 1824 when the state of Indiana and the city of Seymour were combined. It is named after General James Seymour who fought in the War of 1812. The town was first surveyed in 1825 and it was built on land that had been donated by the general. The first post office was established in1826 and it was called Indianola. The name changed to Seymour in 1829 because a railroaddivision passed through the town. In 1860, the community bought an old mill from John Pemberton for $2,000. The mill operated until 1914 when it caught fire and burned down.
