Seymour, Indiana is home to some of the most important ammunition manufacturing plants in the United States. These plants are responsible for producing a variety of munitions including bullets, shells, grenades, and rockets. Ammunition production here began in 1851 when David Seymour founded his company in what is now Seymour Township. Today, David Seymour's son, Vernon, continues the legacy by running the company today with his sons Barry and Greg. The town of Seymour was first settled in 1829 by George Washington Irving and his family. After purchasing land from the Potawatomi Nation, they built a log cabin on what is now State Road 25A east of downtown Seymour. In 1831, they started production at their new factory which produced shot guns and pistols. The original factory stood until it burned down in 1930. It was rebuilt and produces rifles today under the name "David Seymour Firearms." Ammunition production continued through World War Two until it was replaced by nuclear weapons production in 1945. However, it remained an important part of local gun culture until 1985, when it closed its doors forever.
The town of Seymour, Indiana is located in the same general area as modern-day Seymour, Michigan. The first Europeans to visit this area were the French in the 17th century and they named it after Pierre- du-Lac de la Salle, Sieur de La Salle. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded central Illinois and passed through Seymour on their way to Battle Creek. General Jackson stopped at a small farm called Seymour on his march southward. The owner of the farm was so impressed with General Jackson that he gave him a copy of his book "Life of Andrew Jackson". After reading this book, General Jackson ordered his troops to stop at the farmhouse for dinner. The next day, he rode into town and dedicated a small chapel in honor of Saint Laurent de la Salle at the courthouse square. Seymour was originally part of what is now Lansing County but it became a separate county when it was organized on February 16, 1827. On July 1, 1861, it became a part of Union County when that county was created from parts of Wayne and Ottawa counties. On January 3rd, 1907, Seymour lost its independent status when it merged with Steubenville into one Adams Townshipality. On December 14th 1977, following an act by the Indiana Legislature entitled "An Act To Change The Name Of Some Place Names In Adams Townshipality", Seymour was renamed "Seymour" after Claude A. Seymour (1881–1965), an educator and public servant who served as mayor of Steubenville from 1963 to 1965 and chairman of the township board from 1966 to 1978. On November 15th 1941 local residents voted not to become members of World War II Veterans' Memorial Council due to concerns about possible military spending in their community which would have occurred had they joined forces with other towns in support of war effort financially or otherwise; however they did contribute $2 per member towards costs associated with construction project finalizing plans for memorials across America call then known as Veterans Memorial Park (now called West Side Park).
