The remainder of Elkhart County includes 11 townships which are spread out over an area larger than Rhode Island and smaller than Connecticut. It lies on the North Branch of the Grand River, east of Terre Haute and west of Evansville. The village of Schererville was founded in 1824 by David Scherer and his family. The first post office was established in 1826. In 1832, Schererville became a township under state law. The name "Schererville" was given to the town by General James Wilkinson after he visited it during the Black Hawk War and commented on its beautiful countryside. In 1870, a gristmill was built in Schererville by Daniel Denton and others; it remained in operation until 1923. A two-story frame school building was erected about 1880; it served as a meeting place for the First Presbyterian Church from 1881 to 1893 and again from 1907 to 1970. In 1922, a new school building was constructed for SchererVILLE High School; it remains functioning today as that school's main administration Building In 1927, an addition to the original high school building were built which housed gymnasiums (now used as community center), auditoriums (now used as classrooms), science wing (now used as library) and art wing (now used as music room). This addition also includes an underground garage which served as our first municipally funded public garage The current high school building opened its doors on October 22nd 1984 with Msgr./Mrs Tom Burnett presiding over proceedings On January 1st 2006 much fanfare surrounded what could only be called "thelargestever local tornado ever seen in this area", when widespread areas throughout town were knocked out by EF3 winds estimated to have been around 100 mph! tragically no onewas injured however property damage totaling $1500+/-was sustained
