Schererville is an unincorporated community in Clearfield Township, LaPorte County, Indiana. It is located on the southern edge of the town of Clearfield and includes a small amount of land north of I-465. The population was 514 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in this area were David Scherer and his family who arrived in 1818 from Ireland. They built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the village of Schererville and began to farm the land. A store was also founded here by David Scherer and his family in 1841. In 1853, David Scherer's son John opened a general store which continued to be open until 1978 when it closed because of economic conditions. The first post office was established at Schererville in 1854. It was named for David Scherer's father, who had died earlier that year while serving as postmaster. The first mail carrier came through this location in October 1859 with letter W3 from Warsaw, Poland via Cincinnati to Indianapolis; however, this service stopped after only two trips due to lack of horses. A stagecoach route between Cincinnati and Indianapolis operated until 1865 when the Indiana State Road Commission constructed I-465 which made travel between these two cities much easier than it had been before. As traffic increased on I-465, so did requests for USPS drop off points along its path leading south into LaPorte County from Marion or northwest into Porter County; accordingly, David Scheimer opened (in 1861) what is now known as "the Avenue Store" on one side of I-465 near present day Danbury Road/Route 43 just east of where today's state road intersects it. With new technology comes new opportunities for businesses – such as telephones (being introduced around 1907), automobiles (starting being bought by farmers during World War II), supermarkets (beginning appearing around 1945), etc.; all these changes created an ever-growing demand for space within town limits which led to more buildings being erected over time including churches (1911), high school (1936), bank(1949), factories(1960s & 1970s) - all resulting in more development downtown than existed prior to their opening! Although many businesses have moved away over time due to changing times or competition from other towns closer by - such as Danbury Rd./Route 43 becoming an arterial highway - most downtown buildings remain part of local history & are used currently by various organizations either using them as meeting places or storing materials! The following list provides a brief description about each building listed: Church: First Congregational Church #1 was built on land donated by Mrs., Anna Moody in 1911; originally called "St Peter’s". The church has served both worshipers within town limits and those outside since then (& still does). The current pastor is Revd Dr Jimmie Cookman who replaced Revd Dr Rick Trites Jr.) in 2016 after serving since 2011 . Avenue Store: This building housed the country store beginning operation back in 1861 when “Dane Bros” shutterred their business here after years running successfully without interruption….. Named for late Mr….David Sacher who donated key lot… continously operates under new ownership with multiple locations across US.. Several prominent individuals have pastored here including Ivanhoe Bechtel Sr., Edwin Drake Sr., Elmer Gantry Sr., Jerry Lewis….. Overhead sign still reads “Dane Bros” . . . . . . . . ."Dane Bros" remained open until 1978 when they closed due to economic conditions." School: First Schoolhouse #2 was built circa 1840 adjacent to what is now Old Mill Pond; original name given may be "Stowe Academy" but structurally similar too public school property then lawrence Co High School soon acquired name change also 🙂 became known simply as "First" starting Jan 1st 1889…… After years long struggle against numerous offers/competition from neighboring schools nearby – finally achieved legal status Nov 12th 1912 – giving future students free access same day!!!!! No longer functions currently though use can be found inside old grain Elevator next door if desired…."First" continued serve pupils grades K thru 8 until 1954 when lawrence Co High School shuttered doors permanently………………….. Today First International …………………………………………. started up again 3 years later with 4th grade facility across street!"First Local Schools Website

Schererville is a small town in Hamilton County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,977 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Schererville-Normal City, IN-MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in this area were two families from Ohio who arrived in 1814. They named their new community "New Harmony." The townsite was surveyed and organized by the Ohio General Assembly on February 12, 1826 under the name of "Rufus village." On May 26 of that year, New Harmony was renamed for John Scherer, a delegate to the Kentucky Constitutional Convention and an early settler in what is now Illinois. In 1830, Rufus village became one of ten townships in Hamilton County when it was created from parts of Arenac Township and North Posey Township. The original township boundaries were unchanged until 1974 when they were redrawn based on changes in land ownership within the county. Schererville's incorporation as a town occurred on November 3rd, 1903 following a vote by its citizens. This event marked the first time that a town had been incorporated in Hamilton County since 1800! At its incorporation date there were only 154 residents living in Schererville; however today there are over 2K residents living here with more than 350 businesses located within its borders! The primary industries that have thrived here include agriculture (cotton), manufacturing (steelmaking), retail trade (the local grocery store chain), health care services (two hospitals and dozens of clinics), and service sector jobs such as healthcare aides and Deliveroo riders!
