Schererville, Indiana is a small town located in the southern part of the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 5,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area and is situated on the south bank of the White River. The first European to visit Schererville was French missionaries from Quebec in 1674. Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette had come southward from Illinois in 1679 and reported that he had found a large body of water on which he could build a small fort for protection against Native Americans. The town site was chosen by General James Fort Dearborn as his new headquarters for Talented Regiment No. 17 (Hancock’s Battalion) when it arrived in 1814 after being scattered across eight states during the Mexican-American War. In 1815, Schererville became an official village under Territorial Governor David Wilson while still under military jurisdiction. On November 1, 1819, Schererville incorporated as a city with a population of 3,906 people under Mayor John Witherspoon. On July 14, 1826, Schererville became one of twenty townships within Howard County when it was organized from parts of Butler and Posey Counties intoHoward County by Act No 158 (1827). In 1870–71 Schererville constructed two miles (3 km) long and one mile wide railroad spur from its wharf at present day Beechwood Avenue to Terrytown Junction where trains connected with Indianapolis and other nearby stations northwestward through what is now Union Township to Mumbai and Lafayette counties northward to Terre Haute before continuing their journeys eastward to Washington Dixie via Louisville/Jefferson City/Benton Harbor/Purdue University before reaching Chicago IL late in life; this line has been abandoned but some trackage remains today near Prospect Heights IN.). It was not until 2001 when Austrian Scientist Andreas Teschler developed an innovative design called "Teschler Rifle Scope." This optical system incorporated six 9x42mm lenses that could be focused into one unit and they were able to provide magnification levels up to 10x which gave gunners greater precision while engaging their enemies at long ranges.
