Schererville is a town in Schererville Township,fairfield County,Indiana. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. From 1847 to 1881 it was known as "Churchtown." In 1861 Schererville became the county seat and remained so until 1898 when Evansville took over that role. The first post office in Schererville was established in December, 1847. John Henson served as postmaster from that date until his death on October 6, 1865. The first store in Schererville opened on Main Street in 1849 by Fenton & Son. By 1860 there were five stores in the community with a population of about 100 people. By 1870 there were twelve businesses with a population of more than 500 people and by 1880 there were twenty-four businesses with a population of more than 1,000 people. In 1861 Schererville became the county seat because Evansville had no other towns large enough to support such an establishment and stayed so until 1898 when EvansVILLE took over that role
Schererville is located in La Porte County, Indiana. The community was founded in 1853 by George Scherer and his wife, Lucy. It was named after General John Scherer, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. The first store in Schererville opened in 1854. In 1865, the Scherers built a home on the site of today's downtown business district. The Scherers were forced to flee their home during the Indian Wars and moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana before returning to Schererville in 1868. They died there a few years later.
