They published an article about their new community in the January 1816 issue of the "Indianapolis Gazette." By 1800, all of Butler County had been organized into townships - and Schererville became part of that township. In 1825, it became a village when Isaac Prentice donated 640 acres (2 km²) to the Village Trustees for that purpose. The name change came about because Schererville had become a popular place to live due to its mild climate and easy access to waterways. In 1836, General Order No. 2103 authorized construction of three steamboats on the Wabash River by selected citizens of Indianapolis for use as passenger boats on various trips between Indianapolis and Chicago via that river's navigation route. This provided transportation for people and goods overland from those cities during much of the 1840s and 1850s; passengers often took boatloads of passengers downriver each day before continuing their journey by stage or wagon train across Iowa or Illinois country through what is now Union Township, Butler County
