In 1865, the first railroads arrived in Indiana and made transportation easier for people living near Indianapolis and Chicago. During World War I, Schererville served as an ammunition dump for troops fighting in Europe. In 1922, Schererville became one of the original townships in Marion County, Indiana. It remained a township until 1973 when it was merged into nearby Terre Haute with its current name reflecting its historical ties to both communities
