On July 20, 1856, the Schererville Gazette reported that a party of riflemen had started a fire in a cornfield near town. One man was killed and five others were wounded. In 1898, there was an article in the "Schererville Courier" reporting on the construction of the Schererville armory. The gunnery range and powder magazine were completed by October 1, 1898.
Schererville is a small town in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Wayne–Washtenaw County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Schererville was John Scherer who platted the town in 1836. The community was named for David Scherer, a lawyer and Baptist preacher from Louisville, Kentucky. The first school in Schererville was built on the corner of First and Washington Streets in 1839. A second school was built on the site of the current Post Office building in 1881. The Scherers operated a grocery store adjacent to their home until 1861 when they closed it down due to financial difficulties. The store reopened as an dry goods store around 1870-1871 under new ownership and continued operation until it failed in 1907. In 1916, Schererville became one of five townships within South Bend Township, which would become part of South Bend County in 1927. In 1951, all but one township within South Bend were abolished and merged intoFort Wayne–Washtenaw County; however, Schererville remained independent until 1984 when it joined with neighboring West Point to form what is now known as the Fort Wayne metropolitan area (MSA). According to 2007 data from US Census Bureau, there are 449 people living in Schererville total including 298 households and 155 families; 267 males (47%) and 242 females (53%) age 25 or over; 223 full-time workers (82%); 148 students; 50% Black or African American; 28% Hispanic or Latino

In 1847, the County of LaPorte was formed from parts of Schererville and other towns in southern Indiana. In 1869, LaPorte became a city with its own police department.
