Schererville, Indiana is a small town in southwestern Indiana. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Vigo County,Indiana Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name Schererville comes from Jesse Scherer who settled there in 1837. The town was laid out in 1836 by David Scherer and his brother George Scherer. They were surveyors for the Indian Territory government and traveled through the area surveying land for grants. When they came to this location they named it "Schererville" after their ancestor Jesse Scherer who had settled here earlier. The first post office was established in 1837, and continued serving until it closed in 1907. The current post office building was built in 1908 and is located on Main Street near the intersection of US-12 and US-23. Today, many of the original buildings from early days remain standing including several churches, a schoolhouse, a storehouse/marketplace, a Masonic Lodge (now called Union Temple), an old general store/laboratory with tools and machines used by farmers during farming years as well as some more recent additions like a Walmart Supercenter and two golf courses nearby - one operated by screenervilers amateur golfers club known as "The Old Course", also home to one of Southern Indiana's only amusement park attractions - Six Flags Over Indiana theme park which opened its doors to visitors on July 5th 1984

Schererville is a town in Henry County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lafayette, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Schererville was founded in 1824 by George W. Scherer and his brother-in-law John Pfeffer as a small farmstead on the site of present day Schererville Township. In 1832, Schererville became a town when it absorbed part of nearby Crawfordsville. The first store in town was built on Main Street in 1834 by Elisha H. Beasley and Averill Knight. The first school was established in 1835 by Mrs. Lucy Beasley and Drs. James Kricheiser and Isaac Haines with twelve students from two families from neighboring towns to teach reading, writing, and arithmetic to children living within three miles (5 km). In 1840, Schererville had a population of 490 residents; it grew to over 1,000 by 1860 when it annexed territory from multiple settlements including Weirton Heights (now Weldon), Lockport Township (now Lebanon), Griggsboro (now Griggsboro Hills), White Hall (now White Hall Heights), Easton Township (now Wrightstown), and Moreland Township (now Moreland). At its peak in 1870–1880, Schererville had an estimated 2,000 residents; however by 1890 it had shrunk to just over 500 people due primarily to increased railroad traffic which resulted in less need for agriculture or housing development around thetown center while larger communities such as Lafayette exploded outward across Henry County The first post office was established at Scherervillerville on October 20th, 1836 by Jacob O’Brien with the name “Newburgh” after Newburghshire County north of Edinburgh where he lived until his death that year. By 1840 there were 9 mail carriers serving the community plus 6 drivers for the local horses pulling wagons laden with mail up hills to be delivered into town at pointe de la charette on what is now Main Street near today’s High School building By 1850 there were 14 businesses operating within the community including nine stores/stores – 5 tanneries/buttercups Manufacturing plants – 3 brewers – 1 blacksmith shop – 1 wheelwright shop -1 harness & saddle shop -1 cooperage In 1863 Union troops under General Ulysses S Grant burned all but one building inside what is now First Methodist Church complex during an occupation raid designed to quell local rebellion against Union forces following Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation Scherervillerville lost much of its commercial activity due largely to transportation changes brought about by railroads which began traveling through Hammondsburg instead of coming through rural villages like Scherervillerville making agricultural production more difficult However some early pioneers such as Drs James Kricheiser & Isaac Haines who started a pharmacy here remain significant members of our town’s history

The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, and by 1830 it had a population of 2,500. In 1836, Schererville became the seat of government for newly created Elkhart County. The county reached its peak population in 1860 with 9,000 people living in 100 businesses and two hundred families. However, during the American Civil War (1861- 1865), many residents joined the Union army and consequently lost their homes and livelihoods. After the war ended, the population declined again until it peaked at around 20,000 in 1920. During this time, Schererville also become known as a center for education with several high schools and colleges located here.
